Market Friday : Visiting an Antique Store //Friday Market : Visita a una Tienda de Antiguedades / ENG/ESP

Hello, it's a pleasure to write again for the #MarketFriday community hosted by @dswigle. Today I will take you to a small antique store called Chair Caned Rushed. Located in downtown Kent, the store's main service is the restoration work of caned and rushed chairs, and the sale of used objects and antiques such as furniture, decorative objects, jewelry, films, cutlery, books, etc.

The owner of the shop is an antiquarian, a person fond of antiques. He has been managing this business for more than thirty years. His work consists of restoring the objects before offering them for sale. He also does restoration work for the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Inside the store, space is limited and things are stacked and piled up from the floor to top. This makes it difficult to see and detail all the products there. At first glance, I couldn't notice rare and unique items or items of great value. I suppose there will be some, but I couldn't see them. The quality of the products for sale there could be considered good to fair. I have the impression that the owner of the business acquires these objects from purchases or pickups made in homes in the area.

People shop at these types of businesses for a variety of reasons. They do it for their own excitement and enjoyment, and because of the quality, authenticity and history of such items. First, some people buy an antique just because they like it. They see something they find rare, unique or just beautiful , and they just get it. Others buy antiques because of their quality. No doubt , some old items are better in terms of the materials and manufacturing techniques used to make them. This is very common in furniture, for example. Other people buy antiques because they are fond of of history. They buy memories of a particular time. They buy the stories these objects tell. For example, a cassette player takes us back to a particular era when this device was introduced and used. They tell us what songs people used to play , what singers were populars, and so on. Used books, for example, tell us the story written on their pages, but they also tell us stories about the users who have owned them. The margin notes, the underlining, a smudge of oil or coffee, a bookmark, etc., anything we find in a book tells us the something of those who have used it before us.

At the entrance, we can see these "antiques". It makes me laugh to say "antiques" because I use many of these objects, for example the record player. I feel a bit old.

Books were the most interesting objects I saw in the store were the books. There are literary gems there.

I Am Not Yours by Sara Teasdale

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love—put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

What a cool shop
Great to here of someone restoring antiques and a real treasure chest of cool things in that store

Yes, the work the man does is really interesting . He is very renowned here in town because of his restoration work. Thanks for passing by

Haha! I use a record player too. Don't worry, they are making a comeback! :) I call these junk shops or thrift shops but, I believe you hit the nail on the head, especially during the pandemic, most of these places were not taking donations, so the owners would buy open lots of things from an auctioneer, especially when people passed away. Many children don't want all of their parents' belongings, so they call an auctioneer to sell them. Can you believe it? Not wanting your family's things? I have been to auctions and bought an old Singer Sewing Machine and the drawer was stuffed with sewing notions from 1904? All of these little lipsticks samplers from the 5 and 10 and a little ring from whoever used the machine. I got the name of the people and gave it to them, it was probably their grandmothers. They never went through the drawers. There was money! and coins from around that time! Score!

I love books too. They are the best part of these places. Thank you for giving us a tour! It was truly fun! Happy Valentines Day in advance! ❤️ You know I love when you are a part of the #MarketFriday Challenge! I have personally found there is always so much to learn about people, where they live, and how things are done in different parts of the world and I love hearing from you! For me, reaching out across the globe and learning about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, has been such a rewarding experience. You know how much I love gardens and even our gardens are different from place to place. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the rituals, festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... and what is normal for us? There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. We do differ in many ways, which makes us interesting and unique, but, there are many ways in which are so much alike.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Upped and Reposted!

Hello, Happy Valentine's Day. You know, I would love to have a record player. The sound of vinyl records is so clear, that nothing can imitate it. My dad has a lot of vinyl records, and four years ago we were able to listen to some records, and the sound was amazing. My dad loves to collect things and keep them with him. Yes, I think this store should not be called "antique store" as I called it. It's more appropriate to call it a junk store, honestly. And yes, people sometimes ignore the monetary and emotional value of certain objects and throw them away. It seems to me that you bought an antique gem. My mom sews and she had a treadle vintage sewing machine that I loved. When I was a kid, I thought it was too weird and old, but now I think they are beautiful and that they will make an excellent piece of decoration. You very kind to return the ring.
God! I felt very nostalgic when you mentioned the little lipsticks samplers. I used to think of them as toys when I was a kid.
Thank you for your #marketfriday initiative and thank you for your very thorough and detailed comments. Have a very special day !
