Sim Racing upgrade - adding VR (Meta Quest 2)

in #gaminglast year

I've rattled on in previous posts about my love of cars, sim racing and motor sport in general. I've a budget sim racing "rig" at home that allows me to drive many different cars in many different places, all from the comfort of my own study.

One of the circuits I've tried to learn over the years is the Nurburgring Nordschliefe. Many hear about the Nurbergring but don't necessarily appreciate there are two circuits, the GP and Nordschliefe.

The Nordschliefe is a challenging track and famous for allowing the public to go test and often, crash their cars on it. The circuit is 20.8 km long (12 miles), with 156 corners. It's very easy to forget where you are!

I recently got myself a Meta Quest 2 VR headset which adds a little more in terms of immersion. It certainly messes with your head on occasion and can make you feel rather sick.

I recorded my first ever half decent lap recently which was completed whilst managing to miss all the walls. A miracle 😂. I was driving an AMG GT3 race car and got around in 6:48.841s.

The record for a road legal version of the Mercedes AMG is 6:43.616 so I've still a good way off the pace!

That looks impressive. Does it add to the driving experience when you can look into corners? I can at least say I've been in an AMG around a (small) track and I would take it very gently if I drove it for real.

I find it much more exciting than when using a screen. As you mention, being able to look into a corner is a massive help. Unfortunately my graphic card although mighty powerful, struggles to cope when rendering other cars in a race. I've got some information has to fix that so will play about to see what I can work out. I'm yet to try it at night and in rain (also graphic intensive).

I'm sure my PC would not be up to it. I've not read up on graphics cards as I just don't play many games.
