In the Berne Cathedral

in #gemsyesterday

A large church in a late gothic style located in the capital city of Bern. As I was in Bern after a weekend vacation, I decided to make a short visit in the cathedral as well. The completed construction was around 1893 with the tower addition about 1006 m. high, the tallest in Switzerland. Unfortunately it was inside in renovation so I taked only a few pictures from the whole cathedral. The entry is free only if you want to climb to tower you have to pay around 5 CHF. Here you have everything in all combining history, architectureand breathtaking views.

If you come from the main Stationis easy to reach in about 10 min. on foot or by tram in 5 min. If you have time to tage a view from above on the top of the cathedral, after about 344 steps is a truly awe inspiring experience.

The three west entrances to the cathedral are located at the back of three large portals. Each of the entry is different in height, design and decoration. The central portal was just recently closed for renovation, to mention just a few, it is decorated with a series of statues representing the Last Judgement in Christian theology, a beautiful detailed scluptures telling a dramatic biblical history.

The colorfuly stained glass widows from the 15th century are amazing.

The old town is a Unesco World Heritage Site with charming streetsand many fountains. Here is one of them, the Moses fountain near the Cathedral. Represents a statue of moses holding the tablets of the ten Commandments. like many of the fountains here, it provides fresch, drinkable waterfrom natural springs. a great place to take a break in a historic atmospher.
