Understanding the Differences Between a Constitutional Republic and a Democracy

So it's an election year in the US, which the entire world seems to be involved in for some reason or another, at least it seems that way on social media. One thing that keeps ringing in my ears, and it's becoming extremely annoying, is people talking about how Trump will destroy our democracy, including members of the mainstream media. Well, that is a ridiculous notion coming from uneducated, or just corrupt people. And to preface this, I am not for one side or the other, I am for sovereign individual liberties and do not desire to be controlled by any form of government, so call me an anarchist if you will.

But, you need to know this information, so we are going to go back to good ole civics class today and talk about how all of those people are dead wrong. Most people don't know that the US is considered a constitutional republic, not a democracy, and they don't know the difference or could define either term. So let me help you all out with the difference between the two, and let the Dude take you to school.

What is a Democracy?

Let's start with democracy so we can get this out of the way. The word "democracy" comes from the Greek words "demos," meaning "people," and "kratos," meaning "power" or "rule." So, democracy literally means "rule by the people." In a democracy, the power to make decisions is held directly by the people. This usually takes the form of direct democracy, where citizens vote on laws and policies directly, or representative democracy, where they elect officials to make those decisions on their behalf. Think of it as everyone in the community having a say in how things are run, either directly or through chosen representatives. But it's more about who has the majority rule, leaving the minority out in the wind.

Now some local governments in the US work this way, mainly in cities and counties. State governments also run on their own state constitutions backed up by the US Constitution, so even states are not considered a democracy. Your local municipalities may have new laws and regulations on public ballots for people to vote on where you do have more of a say in what happens in your local area. But this is not how it works on the state or federal level. At those levels, the people do not make the laws, elected 'representatives' of the people do. That's where we get into the next topic...

What is a Constitutional Republic?

Now, let's talk about a constitutional republic. This form of government is a bit more structured. In a constitutional republic like the United States, the country is governed by elected officials who are bound by a constitution. This constitution sets out the laws and principles that govern the land, protecting individual rights and limiting the power of the government. The key here is that the constitution is the supreme law of the land, and it ensures that even the government must follow the rules, although that's not what we have seen in recent history.

In a constitutional republic, the people elect representatives to make decisions and pass laws on their behalf, similar to a representative democracy. However, these representatives must operate within the constraints of the constitution, which safeguards against the abuse of power and protects minority rights. It's like having a rulebook that everyone, including the government, must follow to ensure fairness and justice.

Key Differences

So, what's the main difference between a democracy and a constitutional republic? It all comes down to how power is structured and limited. In a pure democracy, the majority rules directly, and decisions are made based on the majority vote. This can sometimes lead to the "tyranny of the majority," where the rights of minority groups might not be protected if the majority votes against them.

In contrast, a constitutional republic is designed to protect individual rights and prevent the majority from having unchecked power and authority. The constitution acts as a safeguard, ensuring that everyone's rights are respected, regardless of what the majority might want. It's a bit like having a referee in a game who ensures that everyone plays by the rules, so no one team can dominate unfairly. As we have seen by their words and actions, the 'Left' is trying it's best to stray away from the constitution so their majority can rule and have a say so over everyone else, and unfortunately, the leadership on the right is letting them have their way for the most part because they are all aligned with the same special interests. This is not the way it's supposed to work...

Real-World Examples

Okay, so let's get back on topic. To put all this into context, let's look at some real-world examples. The United States is often described as a democracy, but it's more accurately a constitutional republic as I have mentioned. The U.S. Constitution lays out the framework for government and protects individual liberties, while elected representatives make decisions on behalf of the people, or at least they should be. But again, in today's time, we are seeing decisions made on behalf of special interest groups, corporations, and even foreign governments!

Switzerland is a good example of a modern democracy. It practices direct democracy, where citizens regularly vote on various issues and referendums, directly influencing the laws and policies of the country. While Switzerland also has a constitution and elected officials, its frequent referendums and citizen participation in decision-making highlight its more democratic nature.

Why It Matters

Understanding the difference between these two systems is important because it helps us appreciate the nuances of how our government works and why it's designed the way it is. It also highlights the importance of protecting individual rights and preventing the concentration of power, ensuring a fair and just society for everyone. It's all about finding the right balance between giving people a voice and ensuring that everyone's rights are protected, no matter what. Nothing more, nothing less. We need to keep our government officials accountable for their actions and take our liberty back!

So when you hear people talking about how Trump will destroy the democracy, you now have some knowledge to combat their moronic views on the subject and help educate them on the topic. If you hear politicians saying this, they are spouting party propaganda, and you should not elect them on the grounds that they are either just a pawn, or at best, uneducated. Neither of those deserve to be in office writing laws and representing the people. PERIOD!
