Discussion Paper: Other People's Money

I learned quite a bit from this movie but two things that stood out to me the most were how following the law of enterprise is a game and how much business changes over time. In the movie "Other People's Money" the main character, Garfield, is a lover of money and his goal is to make as much of it as he can. He notices the 2 point increase in the company he is partnered with and he finds out it is because of their new division, Wire and Cable, and he wants them to get rid of it because he believes it is not making them any profit. The owner of the company is Jorgy Sullivan. He has been in the business world for many years and he has been in control of this specific company for 23 years. Jorgy does not want to have anything to do with what Garfiled is saying because he believes he knows what works best for his company, considering he has run it for so long. The thing with business though, is that it is always changing. That is something that I believe Jorgy is failing to understand. Towards the end of the movie Jorgy starts to realize maybe he doesn’t know what is best for his company. “I’m scared I don't know this new environment. I’m scared that what I do know doesn’t count for anything anymore. Things have changed” (1:14:20). This is interesting to me because in most areas of life, the more experienced person is more likely to know the best decisions to make, but in business, that’s not the case at all. Because business is always changing, usually the less experienced and new person to the field is going to be wiser and know what decisions to make. “I don’t go away, I adapt” (31:19). Adapting is a huge part of surviving in the business and entrepreneurship world. Without adapting you will fall behind. The other thing that stood out to me in this movie was that business is not just a work field, it is a game. “The best game in the world. I’ll teach you. It’s easy. You make as much as you can for as long as you can. Whoever has the most money when he dies, wins” (30:24). Business is in essence “Survival of The Fittest” (30:43). This is shown throughout the entire movie. There are deals being made and promises being broken, all because these entrepreneurs are wanting their companies to be the most successful so they can have the most money. These two points are thoroughly explained throughout the whole movie. During the speech at the end of the film, Jorgy and Garfield go against each other in a fight for control over the company. Jorgy argues for what he believes is the way business runs best, but what he doesn’t realize is that he is out of date and things have changed. During the speech, Jorgy says “A business is worth more than the price of its stock. It’s the place where we earn our living, where we meet our friends, and dream our dreams. It is in every sense the very fabric that binds our society together” (1:23:51). On the other hand, Garfield is arguing that “you don’t care if they manufacture wine and cable, fried chicken, or grow tangerines. You want to make money” (1:29:27). After the ballot results were finalized, Garfield was the winner. These results didn't mean that Jorgy’s way of doing business was always incorrect and didn’t work well in the past, but it does mean that the business world had changed and Garfield’s way of doing business was a more successful and efficient way at the time.
