This post is a response to the question that @allisonmckinney asked, "Do you believe that there is an infringement of one's privacy with ads that are targeted from Google?" I believe that it can be difficult to tell if Google is listening to you and catering ads to your liking. One might say that it might just be a coincidence. However, I do believe that it is an infringement to an extent. Google collects our data, so it is easy for them to post ads based on what we like. In that sense, I do believe it is an infringement. By taking our data and using it for their personal gain, I think that is an infringement. However, as consumers, we are still willing to use Google even though we know they take our data. So in the end, are we truly helping ourselves out if we are scared of our privacy being taken advantage of? No, I don't think we are helping ourselves. Those who use other search engines probably chose to use those search engines because they were scared of their privacy being infringed. I could also see how people might not think of it as an infringement. As mentioned before, we are willingly using Google, so in a way, we are allowing them to have access to personal data. If we allow them to do this, it isn't really private anymore.
