Vitamin D, or calciferol, is important for overall health, and unfortunately many people are deficient. Vitamin D helps with bone health, inflammation, mental health and calcium utilization in the body. It's essential for optimum performance and should not be overlooked for overall health.

Vitamin D is often called the "Sunshine Vitamin", because it is made in the body with Sun exposure. Vitamin D is found in fatty fish and is most commonly either supplemented with vitamins or synthesized by spending time in the Sun. Those with darker skin often have lower levels of vitamin D and must often take a supplement to ensure they get the proper daily dosage. Take care to increase your intake of fish including salmon to get even more exposure to HDL, Omega 6 and vitamin D during the Winter and you'll see a positive difference as well.

Vitamin D is a hormone and a vitamin we get from eating food and through exposure to the Sun. During the Winter, most people do not receive the Sun exposure required to synthesize this vitamin, and due to this fact many people need to take a supplement to ensure proper vitamin D levels. Generally, it is recommended that people ages 1-60 take a 600 IU supplement for their health. Too much vitamin D can be harmful to the body, so consult with a physician before taking supplements.

As someone who lives in a sunny area, I am cognizant of vitamin D levels in the Winter. When I lived far North, my vitamin D levels were consistently low, and I supplemented with a 600 IU pill. Take care to monitor your levels during your annual physical and specifically ask about vitamin D. Low mood and a lack of energy could be signs of a lack of vitamin D, and the more time spent inside away from the Sun can cause levels to lower noticeably.
