Exodus 1:18-22
So we are in the third post in Exodus now. Of course when the midwives did not obey the government by killing all the male children when they are born, the melech Mitsraim (king of Egypt) asked them why they were letting the male babies live. Their excuse was that the Hebrew women go into labor and give birth before they an get there to murder the babies. God saw theses women and rewarded them with large families themselves. I guess he made them even more fertile. The text says that the Hebrew people grew strong and multiplied.
The Pharaoh then commanded all of the people to throw all of the male children into the Nile river. When the people you hire do not obey, then you set some 'red flag' laws and have the entire population do your dirty work.
There is a hero that will come into our story soon and technically, his mother did throw him into the Nile, so there will not be any drama over his survival. Well, maybe there will be drama. But his life will be by the letter of the law even though it is a loop hole.

So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”
