The art of wayang develops and is popular on the island of Java, even giving rise to variations of wayang. Apart from wayang kulit which is popular in Central Java, there is also a type of wooden puppet which is now known as wayang golek in West Java.
The photo above is of a puppet show craftsman in Sukabumi circa 1911. This photo was taken by Jean Demmeni, a photographer of French-Madurese descent who lives in West Sumatra, and the archive is kept by Leiden University in the Netherlands.
