It was a pretty exciting weekend for sports. The World Cup came to its conclusion, College Football bowl season started, and we got to see some really great college basketball games.
Let's get the World Cup out of the way first. I know this is supposed to be a post about basketball, but you will just have to humor me for a bit. I watched a good portion of the match between France and Argentina. I have to tell you, if soccer doesn't work out for these guys, they should totally try their hand at acting.
I never realized just how much these guys flop and act like they are hurt. Early in the game the goalie from one of the teams "got injured". He went in the air and collided with another guy. What amused me the most was the lag between him landing and him realizing he should be acting like he was hurt.
He came down to the ground and he was just fine. Then suddenly he dropped down clutching his abdomen and continued to writhe around for a good five minutes. You can't tell me these guys don't overplay it when the get even a small bump.
There was no college basketball on Friday night, but I did get to watch my niece play on her high school teams. The JV team had a close victory over their opponent. She did a great job and played pretty much all of the quarters. I even got to watch her take a defensive rebound and take it all the way to the other end to put in a layup.
Coast to coast baby!
She is really coming into her own and it is going to be amazing to see what her junior and senior years look like. I will have to admit, she is a little more confident on the JV team. I think because there is so much talent on her varsity team, she is more hesitant to take a shot or make a play that she would have no problem doing on the JV team.
Hopefully that confidence will grow and she will realize she definitely belongs on the court with the other varsity players.
I forgot to mention, the varsity team won as well blowing out their opponent by something like 50 points.
On Saturday she played another game that we were luckily able to stream. This was a much closer game for the varsity team so she didn't get as much playing time as the night before, but she was on the court a bit. They came away with another win and it was a pleasure to watch them compete.
There were 13 top 25 college games on Saturday. I was able to watch a couple of them. Most specifically the #23 Ohio State/North Carolina game that was part of the CBS Sports Classic. It was a fantastic game with NC hitting a clutch shot with .1 second left to take them into overtime.
They eventually upset Ohio State 89 to 84. #15 Gonzaga proved they aren't going anywhere this season by taking down #4 Alabama 100 to 90. Likewise, #5 Houston proved that their earlier #1 ranking by beating #2 Virginia 69 to 61.
The CBS Sports Classic was full of upsets with #16 UCLA taking down #13 Kentucky by ten points. Purdue holds onto their #1 spot in the nation with a win over Davidson, and #9 Arizona upset #6 Tennessee 75 to 70.
Sunday gave us four games in the top 25.
The lone upset of the day goes to the USC Trojans. They beat #19 Auburn 74 to 71.
That's all the basketball I have for you today. My niece plays another game tonight. Hopefully we will be able to stream it. Sometimes it is like a treasure hunt trying to find out if we can watch the game when it isn't at home.
Check back at the end of the week or an update on all the top 25 hoops action from the week. Michigan State plays Oakland University in a couple of days, so you know I will be watching that!
