I saw a picture of Anfield hours before the game. The whole stadium was covered with Snowfall. At that point, news were already making rounds about the possibility of cancelling and postponing this fixture.
Cancelling this means that Liverpool will have two rescheduled games. Thankfully, that didn't happen. It took two safety assessment for an official statement to be released about the continuation of the fixture as planned.
The lineup for both sides were released in due time. As a Liverpool fan, I was excited to see Konate back in our starting lineup after the injury he suffered in the final phase of the games that were played last year.
Liverpool's bench was looking quite strong too. Nunez, Jota, Endo, Bradley, Elliot and co are the folks in Liverpool's bench.
First Half...
In the build-up to this game, I listened to a lot of podcasts and pundits give their prediction in the preview for the game. Almost everyone was certain that Liverpool would obliterate Manchester United with high scoreline. Some even expected Liverpool to do better than the record 7 - 0 win they got against Manchester United in recent years.
Well, the entire first half of the game ended in a goalless draw for both sides. Of course, Liverpool looked more like a team that would be getting the goals. They also created a bunch of really good goalscoring opportunities. None of those resulted in goals though.
Man United also had their moment of brilliance. They created some chances and forced some shots which were blocked by Liverpool's backline. They also had some poor finishing decision which could have given them some scoreline advantage if their players capitalized on those.
Liverpool would have to do things differently if they want to get a win from this game. Jones, in particular, has to step up his games and be quick with his passes. His first half performance were below par because he holds onto the ball way too long.
Second Half...
While the first half felt non-existent in terms of goals, 4 whooping goals were scored in the second half of the game. The final is exactly what most people didn't imagine would happen.
2 - 2 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United?
Wow! I also didn't expect that.
It could have ended as a loss for Liverpool if Man United didn't mess up the chance they got in the final minutes of the game. It also didn't help that Liverpool underperformed today.
The first goal was a Manchester United goal, scored by Martinez in the 52nd minute. Liverpool equalized that in the 59th minute through a sumptuous goal scored by Gackpo. Both teams walked into the 1-hour mark with a 1 - 1 scoreline.
The other two goals of the game came from Mo Salah (penalty) and Diablo, respectfully.
Points were shared in this game between Liverpool and Manchester United. It's a good performance from United while Liverpool looked loose and weak. Trent also underperformed today, both defensively and in his attacking play.
Wow. What a way for Liverpool to start 2025.
