An Unusual But Fun Request

Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!

Well, we kind of did something very blind today!

Yes even if I have to say so myself! Today was a day for bluntness because we weren't very sharp. Okay given we don't do a lot of these transmissions so we don't know all of the in's and out's of it.

We booked in a Toyota Land Cruiser and it didn't want to select the reverse gear so we thought that it might have been broken inside the transmission. The reverse has a little stopping point so that you can't select the reverse gear from the fifth gear, that would cause some trouble hey.

So the problem was it didn't want to select reverse gear at all even.

We jumped away with a bang and pulled out the transmission, little did we know we were more than able to sort the problem out by just opening up the gear selector housing and put a new spring in! So instead we removed the whole damned transmission! Albeit we did make some extra work for ourselves but having the transmission removed really gave me a lot of space to work with the other things the client wanted sorted out.

The wiring of the vehicle and the transmission really bothered him, there wasn't any problems with it persay but he wanted it to look nice. You know the road really talks about what cars don't have neat wiring ey. No problem sir we can do that for you it will only cost a few hours of labour. Thank you!

Well Yeah We Kind Of Screwed Up But It Was For The Better!

So after taking out the transmission for no apparent reason at all I decided to do a quick cleaning of it before fitting it back in, it is a semi off-road vehicle and since we had the gear selector housing removed exposing it up for dirt and a anything else to fall in there. Yes especially dirt, dirt falls in everywhere, I even did a scrubbing of the underside of the cruiser with a broom to get the most of the dirt loose.

It fell easy enough.

I don't think I did much else than turning they grey into more of a blueish colour! Laughs!

Yeahp this is it!

This is what is upsetting the client, now I do get it and let me tell you why.

If it was my vehicle I would have done the same, I would have wanted it perfect and that's why I did mine a few months ago and that is why I'll be doing it again real soon, before I head down to the seaside the end of the year.

But I won't recommend sending a vehicle into the shop and willingly ask for hours to be spent on this and with every hour the bill ticks up ey. This is something I would do myself and I'll never pay for it myself. But then again it might sound easier for me since I know where to look and what to do. Not everyone is built for the technical side of life. I'm glad I am.

Would You Take A Look At That!

A whole bunch of nothing good left! Laughs, it really doesn't look that much but it was a lot actually. It was a real tedious job getting all of the isolation tape removed with that somewhat useless side cutter lying there. Because when you ask for one they bring you the most wrecked one we have in the shop. 😂

Oh It's All Colourfull Now!

Laughs, well it's certainly not as harsh on the eyes like that old dried up and broken sleeving!

Now I can just add a layer sleeving over this and be done with it, who would know? But I am better than that! So I went off to grab my isolation tape and seal this whole harness up! Winter is coming and we don't want it to get too cold, or hot for that matter!

IMG_20230811_100059.jpg

The isolation tape wont just keep the wires together but it would also protect it from the thing that is supposed to protect it. You see the sleeving is a nice layer of protection but when it has a little dent in it and that little dent presses up against the wires it tends to wear through it eventually.

I've not had it myself, well not that I would have noticed but I've heard people say these things and besides would another layer of protection really be that bad?

Now this is also a very tedious thing to do! I like it but I also don't.

Finally Through That!

It's all sealed up and ready to get the sleeving.

One thing that would have been somewhat nice would have been if I was able to get new plug head fittings, swapping those out would genuinely make it look like a clean new wiring harness

Actually, who would think that a manual transmission would need so many wires connected to it!

Crazy People.

Well Bossman had to order this specially for me! They even delivered it to the door step!

I told Bossman how does he want me to do the wiring harness of I ain't got no sleeving in the shop!

He got me a good amount but it was almost not enough, ALMOST!

Ah The Feels On The Eyes!

Now that is a satisfying sight indeed!

I have to be honest here, the first day riding through mud would have it looking like old again!

With that said it is still an nice feeling knowing that everything will be nice and tidy and securely fitted to the transmission!

I was stupid actually, I didn't plan this out and if I did I would have gotten quite a few more photos. Especially of how it looked when the transmission was fitted and the vehicle itself. But one would not have really seen much of the wiring with the transmission fitted.

But it does look nice doesn't it?

I Was Smart I Tested It Out Before Finishing Up The Job.

Have a good laugh at me trying to make the problem arise again!
