As a freelance writer, there are dry periods where I find myself without work. But, the challenge (as an both an artist and person) is to keep my spirits up and practice a state of readiness. This means paying attention and remaining engaged. So, when the opportune moment presents itself, I might pounce on it.
As they say, a true artist never takes a vacation and, if you love what you do, it's not work ... more of a serious kind of play.
It comes down to patience and faith (both of which are not passive) and require discipline and devotion.
Here's a poem of mine, where I try to address this condition.
The Work, whether employed or not
has been trying to remain
creatively, spiritually alive
Herding words, gathering world
spinning a wheel-shaped web
out of oneself, and waiting
To catch something of sustenance
wrap it in silk and ingest it
so that I might dream again.
