Travel with LightCaptured, a small church at a small village where time has stopped, Thasos, Greece

in #hive-1041012 years ago

A place where time has stopped. Why would I say that?

Perhaps time never stops but that, of course, was my perception of this lovely old small church which I stumbled upon during one of our photo travels to Thasos, one of the famous tourist and vacation Greek island.

The village is called Micros Pinos and is located just a few kilometers away from the sea. Well, everything is just "a few kilometers away from the sea" here. It's not a big island. I drove on a steep curvy uphill road, with beautiful mountains view that took us up to the village and the church.

It's roof was covered with plastic layer, probably under construction or preparing for it. I tried to circle around and find a better shot but there are so many trees around that this was the best angle I could find... Through a whole in the stone wall surrounding that sacred place.

After parking nearby, a couple of minutes walk was enough to check out the village center. There is an ancient amphitheater. But I'll keep that for another time where I will show you the whole beauty of the village. Getting to the church though, we passed by this public phone, that brought me back in time. It appeared still in use, though. I wonder, who does use such equipment, yet?

Entering the church yard, I wanted to "fly over" these stone tiled white-washed steps. I didn't want to leave any dirt or dust on that nice small stairway...

The special bell stand, with the common yellow flag of the Greek Orthodox Church. The church itself has no bell tower, as you saw above.

There are many wooden door of the church. All of them are short, probably built on purpose as one has to bow down and humble before entering the house of Lord?

Other stone tiled steps, once again, beautifully white-washed.

That's the main entrance of the church. Did I tell you its name is "Saint George"?

That's the saint who fights with the beast. The icon is well recognizable by those interesting in the Orthodox Christianity.

Here is a frontal view of the entrance with the beautiful, once again, wooden small door. Unfortunately we couldn't enter inside.

I love to travel on the business days as there are no crowds around but sometimes there is this disadvantage of not being able to enter some public buildings...

Anyway, the church is stunning from outside too. A very old icon kept under one of the doors, the face of the saint cannot be recognized any more, but I guess, that's Saint George too.

Time to "harvest" some sun light on that pleasant bench.

While taking a rest, I continued to enjoy some architectural details of the church. That's more than two centuries old, I can bet!

The roof was impressive as well. I wonder how much time it took its builders to put it up? No wonder the profession of the architects is one of the most respected professions!

Time to further explore that cozy and charming small villages, called Mikros Prinos...

I wonder how much time it took its builders to put it up?

I'll probably repeat myself when I say that time really does seem to have stood still for the masters of the past. To be able to master things, to complete their creations, no matter how long it took them. This is probably exactly why I don't feel comfortable in the fast-paced and low-quality world we live in, devoid of effort and diligence in the work of each one of us.
Anyway, that's such a gorgeous building you show us with your post! I really like whitewashed buildings, regardless of the reason for it, which was laid down somewhere in the past. And whitewashed churches are not many in principle and that is what makes them so special. The atmosphere around them also makes them special. Perhaps mostly because of their antiquity, which this European treasure here certainly seems to be. 😊
Thank you!

!LOL

Exactly!
I've been thinking something similar. Those sand-castled residential building in Turkey are unfortunately a proof of that modern quick-to-build tendency.

Thank you!
