Tales of the Urban Explorer: Salty's Place

in #hive-104387last year

After the many derps of Stoke on Trent, having back to back Time Capsules was a refreshing change of scenery.

Being able to pick something up that you could read, well… what a difference.

32_IMG_5960_32.jpg

'Salty's Place' was simply 'another House' until we arrived, and the reason for the renaming will become apparent only too soon.

Where to park? 'Salty's Place' was sparse in parking opportunities. It was a case of a hefty walk or a park in a place where every bastard knew you were inside.

'Oh fuck it, let's do the yeah we're inside trick today'... , I said to @anidiotexplores. Sometimes I simply cannot be arsed.

46_IMG_5974_46.jpg

When a scene like this greets you, there's a certain sense of expectation.

'Salty's Place' was hardly an exclusive, and I had seen it plastered on Facebook but not too liberally.

Maybe it wasn't too vandalised and smashed to pieces yet?

45_IMG_5973_45.jpg

We couldn't see the house and started to wade blindly through what used to be possibly either a pathway or even a drive. The greenery had gone totally mad while hiding the house completely.

After much swearing for the second time that day, we emerged far side and spotted a small cottage.

34_IMG_5962_34.jpg

It might look like Grandma's cottage, but it was not so isolated that there would be a chance of The Big Bad Wolf being inside waiting to welcome us.

...'this one is supposed to be open?'...

31_IMG_5959_31.jpg

It wasn't and we were getting ratty. For once I figured it out and disappeared inside leaving the confused @anidiotexplores roaming around the outside getting ever more frustrated.

He tends to disappear on me frequently, so I figured this was some payback. It wasn't long before he joined me, the way in being to check all options..., as usual.

1_IMG_5929_1.jpg

How long has this one been empty, and what was it's story? We were about to find out.

2_IMG_5930_2.jpg

Furniture cream sounds strange to me. Polish, I can understand but cream removes wrinkles. I'm too young to understand ancient phrases such as these.

3_IMG_5931_3.jpg

There you go see, I wasn't born in the 1950's. This cottage didn't look remotely like a farm and yet it's owners' roots seem to be there.

4_IMG_5932_4.jpg

A mix of odds and sods including some crystal glasses, or maybe they were cheap counterfeits.

5_IMG_5933_5.jpg

Glasses knocked over. Like 'The Fireman's House', this one had also been ransacked.

6_IMG_5934_6.jpg

Old books from another time. Roy Rodgers I have heard of, but again, this is before my childhood days.

7_IMG_5935_7.jpg

The glasses just left there but by who? Likely not one of those within the old portraits.

8_IMG_5936_8.jpg

A full wardrobe of what appears to be men's clothing and a Bolton Wanderers shirt. Are they still in the main league or have been relegated to the conference?

9_IMG_5937_9.jpg

What do we have here? Mr Salt buying something or other that's fucking expensive from an Agricultural seller. The coal I understand, although if it's to keep warm, that's very old fashioned.

10_IMG_5938_10.jpg

Cyclizine Hydrochloride is an anti-sickness pill. Cod Liver Oil is vile stuff and what you give kids for being little bastards. I was beginning to feel sympathy for Mr Salt.

11_IMG_5939_11.jpg

So that settles it..., it is furniture polish. Cream…, well that belongs in Chocolate Eclairs, or as my late father named them, 'Dogs Dicks'.

12_IMG_5940_12.jpg

I would have preferred to see a full model railway, and not just a book.

13_IMG_5941_13.jpg

I started reading this before noticing the date of 1957. More than half a century ago, and the letter is untouched by time.

14_IMG_5942_14.jpg

Salty as a boy or someone else?

15_IMG_5943_15.jpg

Lots of documents and a 2020 calendar, the story was unfolding slowly.

16_IMG_5944_16.jpg

Salty was a gardening fan. I wonder what he thinks now of the surrounding wild bushes.

17_IMG_5945_17.jpg

Jeez, I'm looking at a story of a very poorly man, and more was to come.

18_IMG_5946_18.jpg

He was making the best of old technology. My last CRT hit the dustbin around 2005, when I bought an Xbox 360. SD resolution was not cutting the mustard.

19_IMG_5947_19.jpg

Not exactly premium brands if you get my jist?

20_IMG_5948_20.jpg

Not one or two but LOTS of tablets to make you shit more, and that's putting it bluntly. Damn Raymond, you were not well.

There was more than one thing wrong, I can be certain of that.

21_IMG_5949_21.jpg

''Salty's Place' was jammed with medicines of many types.

22_IMG_5950_22.jpg

It's gets worse; do I need to explain what's this device is used for?

23_IMG_5951_23.jpg

The kitchen, almost untouched besides the lack of wallpaper.

24_IMG_5952_24.jpg

Tea Bags, coffee, sugar, we could have settled for black coffee if only the property had power.

25_IMG_5953_25.jpg

26_IMG_5954_26.jpg

A history of England. It looks like heavy reading.

27_IMG_5955_27.jpg

Weekly invoices of varying amounts, some more than £100, and all from the same Agricultural supplier. What was he up to?

28_IMG_5956_28.jpg

There were many packs of these, it can't have been easy for poor Raymond.

29_IMG_5957_29.jpg

The admission letter was revealing. Endoscopy looks into organs, to find problems, and this is from 2019. Maybe 2020 was his final year on planet earth.

30_IMG_5958_30.jpg

I could have used those big roll's during the COVID times. Was it that pandemic thing that finished him off?

35_IMG_5963_35.jpg

36_IMG_5964_36.jpg

We exited and found a very open shed area with a few interesting items.

37_IMG_5965_37.jpg

Power tools, open to the elements. If there was a door I couldn't see one.

39_IMG_5967_39.jpg

40_IMG_5968_40.jpg

Even the sheds contained ancient documents.

Someone didn't quite understand how a diary works? That's a lot of old scribbling.

41_IMG_5969_41.jpg

Was this Salty's property or someone else's?

42_IMG_5970_42.jpg

3/6 for a paperback book about Geese Rearing of all things. To put that in perspective it's less than 20p in modern current.

43_IMG_5971_43.jpg

44_IMG_5972_44.jpg

This was stuck to an outside door and concludes this sorry tale. I don't need to explain Salty's whereabouts, but I do wonder if he's still alive.

I know retouch pen for fornitures, but never heard of cream. What is it used for? If polish, it is the last phase of making a forniture.

I think it may have have a rename over the last 70 years or so. That bottle doesn’t exactly look new!

Man, this tour made me sad for ole' Mr. Salty. Seems like he enjoyed his time with the land, possibly model railroads and history too. I imagine he was an interesting old character.

It’s not the first time I have seen one like this. I tracked another to a OAP home and found that she had died. Could well be the same, I would need to check the obituaries.

I would imagine, it probably is based on what I saw there. It didn't look like he was doing well at all. I also wonder why the owners of the property haven't cleaned it up and rented it to other tenants.

That is strange, the woodland would need to be severely cut back and Salty’s stuff disposed of first.

This reminded me of the Salt Island I was supposed to visit before... It doesn't look like a salty place though 😅

Thank you for a fascinating voyage of discovery. This tale left me rather moved and feeling for old Salty.
Do you think he was he living on his own? If so that must have been tough. It is rather sad to think his personal effects have not collected by any family.

On his own, I suspect so. The wardrobe was full of men’s clothing, all correspondence only to Mr Salt.

The fact he rented it, and all those outgoings says he had money but that won’t buy you health.

It looks like there was a good mix of old and new in this place. I can't get over how overgrown it is. You wouldn't even know it was there looking at the one photo. It's pretty crazy how nature takes over when you don't keep it in check!

There was an easier way to get in and out, but as usual we took the tough route… quite normal 😀

I started reading this before noticing the date of 1957. More than half a century ago, and the letter is untouched by time.

Remarkable indeed!

I could have used those big roll's during the COVID times. Was it that pandemic thing that finished him off?

Hehhehehehe I love your sense of humor😂😂

It’s likely been stashed away and uncovered by previous explorers. They tend to leave things out. Given more time there would have been much more to uncover inside.

There som real gems in there and it's in suprisingly good shape, suprised no partiers went in there.

thats new to market, wonder when the bus will pull up. Guess the poor fucker shit himself to death

Not as new as you might think, it’s almost a year since the visit.. and yeah.. death by shit is the likelihood.

It is certainly off the radar then

Woah this house from the outside sort of reminded me of the house of the old lady in the movie Ratatouille! Damn being able to see the photos, books and left over medicine was quite crazy, also the toilet area looks like the most modern part of the house and I can see why lol!

Surrealism in its purest form, it looks like a movie set!... Wow, yes, it is a "trip to the recent past"... Excellent find and a high-end post as always, friend!

How Bizar to see all the stuff left... The poor man must have had a difficult last period of his life...

I could have used those big roll's during the COVID times.

First thing that came to mind when I saw them too haha.

Some of those stuffs looks neat, unlike the tales you've been visiting before now. There's something different about this one, I don't know maybe because the cloths still looks fresh and neat and not dusty. All in all it was a beautiful tale but i still got the feeling someone is living there
