元音老人曾经说“1700则公案，一串穿却时如何？” 还有个说法”禅宗公案只批发不零售” ，不是说我这个我看懂了，另一个我不太懂，那实际上你是完全都不懂。因为它讲的不是语言，也不是讲的故事，也不是讲的道理，只批发不零售，就是这个意思。
1700公案，一串穿却，就是《五灯会元》和《指月录》这样的书，汇总的最核心的最重要的禅宗语录，是中国禅宗语录的代表作。
《指月录》收录禅宗公案1700个，《五灯会元》差不多也是这个数。
在明代中期之后，《指月录》问世，它流行之后，看《五灯会元》的就少了，看《指月录》的就多了。明代这个时候篇持《指月录》更偏向禅宗总体的风貌，流派之间的那种变析，还有斗争的痕迹啊, 他不太感兴趣，他就是摘入那些禅宗共同的东西，因为时代不一样。
当然，到了现在我们《五灯会元》看得多，更简洁些，更接近禅宗当时那个历史发展的状况。
