Hive Open Mic #98: Walk With Me (Cover of a Negro Spiritual)

in #hive-1057863 years ago

This is a DEEP prayer from the days when my ancestors were told by those who had them cruelly enslaved that they were not even human, much less worthy of having a personal relationship with God that their masters took for granted ... but these songs are a testimony of the fact that the enslaved that God would indeed hear them, and walk with them ... all the way to the dawn of freedom!

Ow, hey there dear @deeanndmathews

How cool to see you in Hive Open Mic!!
you know how I like to listen to your voice :)) and in a prayer too!

Hi there, friend -- I saw this theme and thought I would get involved! I still am out here making music! Thank you for the encouragement!

Great. I remember you singing some spiritual songs earlier and your history lessons :)

About once a year I come on out ... hoping to get back on track in the studio later in the year, but you know, the "panorama" and all ...

Good to see your face and hear your voice! Very poignant song.

Thank you! I come out and sing from time to time!

Wonderful job …and no music with it. This is a beautiful song @deeanndmathews and singing is healing.❤️‍🩹 It has been horrific what humans have done to each other throughout history. For that I am truly sorry. 💕

No need to apologize ... just keep doing the right thing. We are making new history, every day!

Woohoo! What a great song selection for this week's Hive Open Mic theme: "Conversation with God." Good to hear your beautiful singing! I think this is the first time we've crossed paths here on Hive, and I'm glad to begin knowing you through the music you share. Wishing you joy.

Thanks for joining in and enjoying Hive Open Mic

Thank you so much ... I have been in Open Mic exactly twice, and was reminded when it came up on my front page about the first time with a theme I am definitely passionate about! It's good to be back and thank you for the welcome on my return!

They weren't christians originally (some where muslims), but they arrived already deeply spiritual. This would explain why it didn't matter what they were told (that they weren't worthy of God's attention), because they knew the opposite to be true.

It's amazing how many of these spirituals also follow the classic African call-and-response syntax of singing.

The few words you used and the song you sang for us, hit my heart hard. Though knowing a bit about the history of the black, I still have difficulties digesting one human race determined another human race not to be human. In my view we only have one human race, the humans regardless of colour and beliefs. Am glad the situation is better today in comparison. Though more changes are still required. Am happy to see (and hear) 'fighting' for the cause. Bringing across the knowledge to as many peeps as you can, is important. With your positive approach, you do a great job in my honest opinion. Enjoyed your singing a LOT! :)

Thank you so much ... yes, it is a long story, and there are still people in my home country still dehumanizing the descendants of those who built the country's foundational infrastructure for them ... but we keep working toward maintaining and expanding freedom.

I have not forgotten y'all in Q-Inspired ... I will return ...

There are Negro Spirituals that indeed reference Muslim practice, as it happens ... and then there is the whole array of African religions in the region ... and then there is research that shows that there were Christians as well, although in the minority (out of millions of slaves). But by three ways, the Africans were more connected to the spiritual world than anyone who enslaved them ... and so, all of that ended up being rolled, along with the call-and-response, into the Negro Spiritual.
