Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town South Africa!

This is Week 140 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge, and the theme for the week is "The Sea”.

This is a theme that is close to my heart! I am a surfer, and surfing is one of my main other topics I post about on HIVE besides music. It means that I go to the sea for fun, stress-relief and a kind of meditation, but I also know that the sea can be dangerous and that I have to respect it. This is why I love the song “Jackie” that I have chosen to sing this week so much. It was originally released by Sinead O’ Connor, and here is that version:

However, the version I know, and love, is a cover itself, but a fantastic one by Placebo that ends an entire album of excellent covers that they did. This album often accompanies me on road trips! Here is their version:

“Jackie” tells the story of a woman whose lover/husband is lost to the sea, and in her mourning, she eventually becomes a ghost that waits for his return by the seaside…

Before I go: My good friend @clairemobey is a fantastic singer and songwriter. She is the person I perform in public with as a collaborative duo called MobeyDick (we sing original songs written by both of us). Unfortunately, Claire doesn't have a decent guitar of her own, and this gets in the way of practising and writing new songs! In better news, we have found a competition that a local music shop is running where a beautiful guitar is the prize. Entrants had to come and sing original songs at the shop, and the video with the most views wins! We're off to a great start but we would love it if you could click on the link below to add your view (you don't need a Facebook account to view it):

By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP. If that sounds interesting, please think of a song you would like me to try and look out for my post on Thursday?

Lyrics for “Jackie” by Sinead O’ Connor / Placebo

Jackie left on a cold, dark night
Telling me he'd be home
He sailed the sea for a hundred years
And left me all alone
Now, I've been dead for twenty years
I've been washing the sand
With my ghostly tears
Searching the shores for my Jackie
And I remember the day that
The young man came
Said your Jackie's gone he's lost in the rain
And I ran to the beach
(Laid me down)
You're all wrong, I said as they stared
To the sand, that man knows the sea
Like the back of his hand, he'll be back
Sometime, laughing at you
I've been waiting all this time
For my man to come
Take his hand in mine
And lead me away to unseen shores
I've been washing the sand
With my salty tears
Searching the shores these long years
And I walked the sea forevermore
Till I find my Jackie
Jackie
Jackie
Jackie

Lyrics for "Jackie" by Sinead O'Connor / Placebo

Y me dejó sola
Ahora, he estado muerto durante veinte años
He estado lavando la arena
(Laid me down)
Y me lleve a costas desconocidas
He estado lavando la arena
Con mis lágrimas saladas
Buscando las costas estos largos años
Y caminé por el mar para siempre
Hasta encontrar a mi Jackie
Jackie
Jackie

I absolutely adore this song. Beautifully done @jasperdick!

Great interpretation. I like your version. Congratulations.

Thank you so much! I heard Placebo's cover version first, which means the actual original sounds funny to me... Oh well!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

I've added in the link to the lyrics on the Musixmatch website now - thank you for the reminder!

Hi @jasperdick , the sea is undoubtedly those places where one can return to the essence. Always linked to stories of love and adventure, but it is also an environment for transformation. I really enjoyed your interpretation this week, I hope your friend can win the guitar, I know how important it is for a musician. A giant hug from Venezuela to South Africa.

Thank you so much! I don't know if you have Facebook but I don't think you need an account to click on the link and view the video. Her first song is beautiful and I'm quite excited about the other two as well!

Nice song, Wonderful voice, its the guitar for me. I wish I could play it too. And Ill definitely learn how to play it one day,by God's grace.

It sounds like you love music and have talent - if so, guitar is just a matter of time. The trick with guitar is to get through the first stage where your fingers hurt and you don't sound good. As soon as you can strum to a rhythm and change between about 4 chords - you will be able to play songs and it will start to feel more like "fun" than "practice", even though you will continue to improve from there. I call it "getting over the hump"!

For me the main thing that people don't talk enough about when teaching guitar is keeping the rhythm with your body... I tap my foot and then both hands must follow that rhythm together.
