My Experience through Retirement / Silver Prompts

in #hive-1063162 years ago

When I saw the "Silver Prompts" referring to "Retirement" and what I believed it to be?, quite a few thoughts went through my head....well! quite a lot actually...some nice thoughts and some really shitty ones too.

My perspective of Retirement back in the day, was totally different to what I'm experiencing now.

I worked in the corporate world for seventeen years after losing our Picture Framing business 25 years ago, due to a thieving staff member...that is another story...OK, we wont go there just yet, we'll leave that one for another post.

As I was saying...after working for a Bank as an admin clerk and receptionist in the Corporate world, I often dreamed of the day when I would retire, and how wonderful it was going to be having freedom to do what ever I wished, without having to answer to any "Hierarchy" in the establishment.
Oh boy!...how naïve was I then.

What a blast it was going to be Lol!

The first two years were awesome, I was very busy helping Silver Mamma Chef in her kitchen, cooking for The Crew before they took off on the road to Cape Town, leaving Silver Mamma Chef's Kitchen from a "Hustle and Bustle" to absolute dead quietness, and her heart broken.

baking.jpg
I miss "Silver Mamma Chef's Kitchen" she had so much going on there, cooking and baking, always thinking up new recipes and preparing menus for the boys.
Oh well!...life goes on...awhile has past since, and I'm still trying to find my way through this life's journey called retirement.

family.jpg
I thought I'd always have my children around me forever...it didn't work out that way unfortunately, they grew up and flew out of the nest looking for greener pastures...I mean, I'm happy for them...if only they could've stayed little, just for a tad bit longer.

Candice went to Australia, Angela to Cape Town, there's still my eldest daughter Celeste who lives on the other side of the City up the North Coast of Durban, which is about a 45 minute drive from me, being a career woman, she's always jetting around the country, so we don't often see each other.

So!... that leaves Me and the old man.
I often wonder where the years went, it seemed to pass so quickly...it feels almost like a dream, if I could put it like that...my grandmother always used to say "Life is short, make the most of it while you're young", now I know what she meant.

coast.jpg
I'm very grateful we still have each other and can do things together, like going away on a bit of a romantic weekend down the South Coast.

bedroom.jpg
Who said you're too old for romance, I might be past "the sell by date" but I'm allowed to dream a little Lol!
Oh my hat!...don't let me start, I might get censored on Hive, Hehe!

me and u.jpg
At least we are free to go where we like with our precious friends Arthur and Lizelle.

lizelle.jpg
My bestie and me @lizelle, enjoying our retirement at the Blue Marlen Hotel.

art.jpg
I do have my Art which I've neglected a bit lately and need to get back into.

painting 1.jpg
One of my paintings in Acrylic.

painting.jpg
The latest one I did a while back, painting keeps me sane, I disappear into another world, writing and painting is something I've always loved to do.
I think if it weren't for my Art and Writing, through this Retirement Journey, I would go bonkers for sure.

The awesome thing about being creative is, one can forget about the world and disappear into another. I find it very therapeutic and good for the soul.

medicinal.jpg
I bumped into Silver Mamma Chef at the Nursery, she told me she's thinking of reopening her Kitchen, she has a health issue and has to start eating whole grain and plant based food.

So she was looking to buy some Medicinal plants to grow in her Herb Garden.
Hopefully Silver Mamma Chef will come up with some new Healthy Menus soon, Lol!

My advice to the younger generation thinking of Retiring?

Think long and hard, make sure your finances are in order, when your investment dwindles, and the purse strings get tighter, that's when life gets tougher.

This is my version of my journey in "Retirement" hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I've enjoyed sharing with you.

Happy Retirement, Until next time, keep healthy and wealthy.
Health is wealth.

aw... now this makes me want to spend every waking minute appreciating my children! 💗The years do pass so quickly! Mine are 10 and 12 at the moment... and we are busy working out some family getaways for the summer. I will be very sad when those, one day, become a thing of rarity. I do hope that you still get to see your children... they all seem to have wonderful opportunities in life (you clearly prepared them well and gave them a fantastic foundation from which to spread their wings). I would love to spend my retirement years being able to see my kids too... who knows what the future holds... I am realistic though. I know they will want to go out and explore the world for themselves. Let's just hope the bonds we create now stand strong into the future. Your post made me a little sad... but in a good way because it gave me a kick up the proverbial too ... to ensure like you...that we make the most of our time with our babies when they are ours🤗

You are blessed to have the dear friendship of a wonderful friend in @lizelle. I think we all know it when we connect with people like that; friends who become family overnight 💗

Seems like even retirement has been full of ups and downs for you @artywink, never a dull moment. Luckily you have your better half, a great bestie as well as your love if art to keep you happy and occupied, sounds like everything is falling into place bat last

Thank you @livinguktaiwan, yes I hope everything is coming to a head now, you're right, there's never a dull moment in my household. As for my bestie, I love her to bits Lol.
Have a great weekend.

What a lovely and heartwarming post! Lovely to see you and hubby enjoying life together. I often find myself dreaming about what it may be like when the children eventually fly the coop. Will @zakludick and I travel? Will we live long into our sunset years? How much time do we have left? Who knows..... I suppose we have to try to not think about life in terms of destinations... Otherwise we forget to appreciate the present as well as the journey. Also, that bread looks freaking amazing... Omg, and your lady if the lake painting is just beautiful!

Thank you so much @clairemobey fir those kind words.
I still have so much to do in my life, I'll have to live until I'm 100. Lol.
Thank you so much for stopping by.

That's it! Just be stubborn about it and show life who's boss 😊😊😊

Absolutely @clairemobey have an awesome day, you and your previous family.

Thank you, @luvshares have an awesome weekend.

It may just be me but what I've noticed about retirement is that the people who don't make plans and pursue interests tend to "get older" a lot faster than those who have passions to pursue... But that's just the perspective of a man in his 30s...

That is true @jasperdick, that's why I keep busy with my writing and art. I don't feel old at all.
Thanks for passing by.

Thank you so much @hive-106316 much appreciated.
Have a great weekend.

The reality can be surprising, lol!

Children grow up and they fly away from their nests. That's a fact. But it's good that you two have each other, your art (which are amazing) and writing too.😍

PS. You and Silver Lizzie look like sisters ❤️

Thank you @ifarmgirl, a lot of people say we look alike. We often say, we need to do a dna test, we were both born in the same place, it's quite amazing.
Thanks for passing by

That's really amazing and I think that happens :) I and my best friend had been mistaken to be twins, lol!

You're very welcome and it's great to read you😍

Thank you so much @ifarmgirl, I need to be more active on the community, life happens to get in the way sometimes Lol.
So many new things are happening and I need to catch up.
Have a great weekend.

You're very welcome and enjoy catching up😊

It is funny, also in my case looking back at what my plans for a dream retirement used to be when I was in my 20s starting my career are so let's say, unreal. My reality is so farther from that once a dream. Life has always had other plans.

But I'm thankful to be alive and with my partner in life by my side. Children are another matter, I never thought my son would leave so young, but he got a great opportunity and I am proud to see him spread his wings, but it is hard to have him so far away, so I can relate with you on that.

Anyway, life is to live it and enjoy it the best way we can, right?

You and Lizzie look beautiful together, you are fortunate to have this great treasure of friendship and to be able to continue sharing it with each other.

Cheers 🤗💕

You're so right @coquicoin , life is to be enjoyed. We have to make the most of it. We have lots to be thankful for.
Have a great weekend.

Yes, we can't have the kids with us forever, can we? We are blessed in still having both our daughters close to us though. They are both living in the Durban area but are also busy with their own lives. But we are happy to see them quite frequently.

Thank you for sharing with us about your retirement, @artywink!
