Hey there everyone!.. I thought today would be a perfect day for an Orchid Update.
AND I decided to start keeping track of them - I counted 70 previous Orchid Updates since I started posting about my collection in 2020
Orchid Journal Entry #71
I want to share an update on three of my Phalaenopsis Orchids .. That are looking absolutely stunning right now. Out of the nine in our collection, these three are well into their blooming phase, and I couldn’t be happier with how they’re turning out. Each one has about 7 to 10 flower buds on their spikes, and roughly half of them are already open, showing off their gorgeous colors. It’s been such a treat watching them grow, and I’ve been giving them a little extra love lately .. seems like it’s paying off!
Meet the Blooming Trio
Let me tell you a bit about each one. The first orchid is almost purely white, with flowers so clean and bright they practically glow. It’s always been a favorite of mine because of how elegant it looks, like it’s dressed up for a fancy occasion. Then there are the other two, and here’s where things get interesting.. both of them have white flowers with a light pinkish center. I was surprised to realize they’re exactly the same! I didn’t even remember that I had two identical ones in the collection - [Identical or pretty close to it]. Guess that’s what happens when you’re juggling nine Phal orchids.. a few details slip through the cracks. But hey, they’re both stunning, so I’m not complaining.
Almost Pure White but not quite!
These two are almost identical with only a few slight differences.
These beauties have been such a joy to care for .. And seeing them bloom like this makes all the effort worth it. I’ve been keeping them in a spot with just the right amount of light, and I think that’s been the key to getting those buds to open up so beautifully. If you’re into orchids, you know how rewarding it is when they finally show off their flowers after weeks of anticipation. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, look at me.. I’m fabulous!”
The Phalaenopsis Orchids love bright but indirect light, warm temps and little to no drafts, making this an ideal spot for them. This area has a southern exposure. Those other orchids in the background (dendrobiums, cattleyas, vandas, etc) prefer bright direct light.
Huxley Steals the Show
Of course, no orchid update would be complete without a little cameo from Huxley .. Our curious (now 7-month-old) pup. My wife and I got him five months ago, and he’s already such a big part of our lives. It is hard to believe it's been 5 months already.
As I was moving the orchids around .. To get some good shots of the blooms, Huxley was right there, snooping around like he always does. He’s so fascinated by the plants, especially when I’m fussing over them. In one photo, he’s got his nose right up to the orchid, sniffing away, probably wondering what all the fuss is about. In another, he’s sitting next to the pot, looking up at me like, “Dad, why are you moving my sniffing targets closer?” He’s such a character, and honestly, he adds a whole lot of fun to these little photo sessions.
It’s funny how much he’s grown in the six months we’ve had him. He’s still got that puppy energy, always wanting to be part of whatever’s going on. Whether it’s orchid care, silver stacking, or just hanging out, Huxley’s always right there, ready to “help” in his own way. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though.. he’s the best little companion.
