Taking the easy road

I wasn't really sure what community to put this post in. It's been on my list of things to talk about for a while now. I figured the Silver Bloggers community might be just as well because it likely verges on a boomer rant depending on how you read it.

I've been noticing more and more lately that people seem to have an aversion to hard work. Trust me, I'm all about working smarter not harder, unfortunately many people don't even do that. They just take the lazy route.

Working in education, my wife and I see a lot of this first hand. Okay, it's more her that sees it first hand since she is a school social worker. I just get to hear her rant about it second hand. It's interesting how many parents choose to let a device babysit their kids instead of actually spending time with them because it is much easier.

I don't have kids, but trust me, I get it. The hard road is hard. That's why they call it the hard road, but if you stick with it, everything else usually just gets easier.

Here is another great example:

We've been having issues keeping custodial staff. I will admit part of it has to do with the pay. The pay just isn't that great. We do what we can, the union negotiates as best they can, but yes, the pay is low. You could absolutely go to McDonald's and possibly make more per hour.

Will you get 40 hours per week though? The possibility of healthcare? Payment into a retirement system that as of right now is actually pretty decent?

People aren't able to look past the hard road right in front of them to see that the easy road isn't always easy for the whole stretch.

I think the other part of the issue (at least with the custodians) is that again, the harder you work at first, the easier it is from day to day after that. I know from cleaning my house that if we let it go for a couple weeks, it is much more work to clean it than it is if we do it weekly.

Barring a kid throwing up or something like that (which doesn't happen all the time), as long as you are doing your job, it just gets easier as each day passes.

Part of me wonders if it is just the world we live in now. I know I myself have been tempted to take the easy road when it comes to getting something done. Truth be told, I'm probably pretty lazy. I'd like to say some of that has to do with my un-diagnosed ADHD, because when I actually set my mind to getting something done, I bust my butt to get it done.

I don't know, but it makes you wonder what a world might look like where everyone just chooses to do what is easiest.

If you look at the crypto world, we already see it to some degree. Airdrops happen and people dump the token instead of putting in the work to figure out what it can do. Sure, some airdrops are crap, but what about your Hive stake? Do you want to put in the hard work to make it grow, or cash out your rewards every day/week for that short term easy?

Is this something you have noticed as well? Am I totally wrong? Is my Gen X showing through? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Don't get me started on the level of so-called parenting of far too many!

Yeah work smarter is great, but too many want instant gratifiction now, and that means getting paid for doing nothing...

No doubt! Sadly, that attitude is really prevalent in crypto, so we are seeing it front and center each day.

Yes as I was reading I was thinking that is the way it is in crypto, but decided against mentioning it🤣

I think attitudes are changing and that can seem strange to our generation. Kids can see someone go from nothing to stardom in music or social media in a matter of months. Most older musicians had to slog for years to get anywhere. People expect quick riches from crypto, but is that really what it is for? Most things with value took time to build.

We are bombarded with images of people with fancy stuff and kids will want it now. Maybe they can if they put it on credit. That may bite them later. We've seen whole economies collapse due to greed and risky ventures.

I don't think it's universal though. My own kids work hard to make their own way and are not buying lots of stuff they can't afford.

It's interesting for sure. I don't think it is totally widespread, but there is definitely something being missed somewhere. For example, I know some people who have great work ethics, but if you don't pass that along, then what is going to happen with your kids? I can't imagine being a parent. It has to be hard, but I'd at least try.

Instant gratification.. spot on! People, and especially the newer generations, do want what they want and they want it NOW! lol.

I'd say it's some people and there were always those like that. Many realise you have to work for it.

OH YEAH.. Almost forgot. How about that new AI app called CHATGPT!!!! I am hearing that if school kids ask it to write a term paper on a certain subject, it will and it will be original.. like no other paper. What the F*$%. I am reading how the New York state board of ed is trying to figure out what the heck to do about this. They are going to ban using the app, but do not know how to tell if the kids are using it or not. HOW LAZY CAN ONE GET!!!! Talk about an easy road.

Here is the link in case you want to work on blocking it on your schools devices... lol

I already talked to my admin team about this a couple of weeks ago. Our business director used it to write her board report that she is going to present to them on Monday night. She is going to fully disclose that she used AI to do it. There are services like "No Red Ink" to combat plagiarism, but if it is all original work, I don't know if that will help. I blocked the OPEN AI site a while ago, but if kids want to use it they are just going to use their personal device. There isn't going to be much way we can stop them. It's awesome and scary all at the same time!

The title reminds me of a song of Pink!
Guess those are the sings of silent quitting.

Yeah, I guess so. Pink is pretty awesome. I got to see her in concert a while ago. Amazing show!

Quick and easy never got many too far, some Shyster's do get away with it then preach into sheepledom.

Between lunch and reading, I'm busy cleaning out an oven, hand over fist the worst job on the list.

No child growing up watching 'the' screen is going to learn about a well balanced life where most work if not easy.

Easy to make babies, not so easy bringing them up, it takes massive effort and constant work/nagging.

!BEER

Ain't all that the truth. Hopefully the oven cleaning is the first thing so you can have that out of the way quickly!

One pre-cooked pizza waiting to go in for lunch, couple of slices each for three of us.

Oven was hot, spray my 'Clean Green' spray (de-greasing fluid in motor vehicle section in shops here) does the job when left for 15 - 20 minutes. Yup plan it, it takes 30 minutes approximately for normal sized family oven... yuck old build-up and you cook in it? Bonus is no strong fumes from using this method.

We enjoying cool rain (hopefully no floods again), if it wasn't cool I would not do that awful task, yet it has to be done.... no fairy helper for me!

Sounds like you have a good method down! We don't use our oven that much. I couldn't tell you when we cleaned it last! Yikes!

When we have electricity we are able to use the oven, failing which on top with gas... Living in Africa be prepared. Braai outside still the best!

Yes it is! I forgot you were in Africa. I don't think I could handle the power outages all the time!

Nor can we, this has been on-going since 2008 on/off, called.... ?

It certainly seems as though many expect things to be handed on a plate to them without any effort themselves. Some jobs have low pay but are good to get your foot in the door, gain some experience and move on after a while.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. It's crazy because we have people hiring in and then they quit after a week. I mean, it's a custodian job, you pretty much know what you are getting into when you interview right?

Yeah exactly. Finding And hiring competent people is a real challenge here in my discussions with people from various other companies too.

Glad it isn't just us, but that still sucks. Doesn't give me much hope for the future of the planet!

Yeah, it is strange times and I am still positive that there is much opportunity out there if people want to take it.

Tons of jobs. I'm not saying people need to settle, but on some level you just need to humble yourself. I mean, I am lucky I have the job I do. If I didn't though, I'd be doing what I needed to support my family.

Same here Bozz. When my pockets were empty when I was younger, I went working on the weekends to fill them up.

It's been a year now since I retired from Walmart (not my career, just a late in life job) and I saw it back then, the new ones come in and skate by, while the older folks picked up the slack. That's not to say that there were lazy old folks and go-getter young ones, but the tide was turning even then. It is sad and speaks volumes to the way people are being herded into dependence on daddy govt.

Yeah, for sure there are good ones and bad ones on all sides. It just seems this attitude of apathy is growing larger and larger. I was talking to my wife the other day and I said what happens when the people with an actual work ethic are all gone?

I think a lot of people are burned out and there is a hopeless feeling about work. I don't think people are lazy I think they are realizing the system will always keep them down no matter how hard they work. Hard work, luck, and privilege are what helps break that cycle.

I would agree that privilege probably has some to do with it. The attitude is totally different now. Even when you talk to new people in the work force. I'd have to disagree that at least a little bit of it isn't laziness.

Back in my time we were raised with both parents. Now kids are raised with only one parent or both thru divorce. The other situation is both parents work and daycare comes into play. The world from my time to now has become fast paced . I'm sure you see it more than I do with the work you and Mrs. Bozz do. Everyone lives on their phone. Even here on hive there is an app for this or that. If your not on social media your not living. The days of a family gathering are gone . Families don't get along or a death in the family separates everyone. Some sit on there home computers 24/7 . There is a world outside explore it, breath the air pending on location of course. That's my 2 cents.

Yeah, things are definitely changing. I am probably more guilty of some of that stuff than I would like to admit. I need to be better about that quite honestly. I'm not great at face to face interaction, but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't still do it from time to time.

First off, hello! I am still here. lol. I am seeing this first hand in my companies call center; people making the bare minimum wage and putting out the bare minimum amount of work. Not sure it would change if their wages did. Pass the buck is another thing I see that ties into this discussion. I have to laugh sometimes at how HARD people work to pass the buck or find the so called easier route. If they would just devote as much effort and time into completing the task well, as they do at avoiding it, then this world would be awesome!

I am probably pretty horrible at this. I am likely infamous for saying that isn't my job. I've gotta say though, when I am in charge of the entire district technology just because something plugs into the wall doesn't mean it is my problem. It's a waste of the districts money if I am driving around turning something off and turning it back on to fix it.
