People say that one only starts from scratch when we are born, but that the rest of the time there is always some advantage, whether it be the path traveled or the knowledge acquired.
But emotionally, one always starts from scratch, since each experience is unique! be it work-related, emotional, educational or any other type. And I say this from my own experience, because even though I am not very old, I have lived through so many things starting from scratch, or perhaps, from scratch point five.
I remember that from my jobs I have been the one to decide to leave, except for one, from which I also wanted to leave, but was held back by the need to bring home the bread and financial stability.
The day they called me to give me a yellow envelope, as impersonal as if it were a catalog that comes in the mail, I gathered the dignity I had left, collected the few belongings I had in my cubicle, said goodbye to those I thought were my friends, and left.
Back at home, I cried for 2 days thinking about what I would do next. That was one of the first times I started from scratch. Now, many years later, I see that that dismissal was really a fortuitous event that opened many other doors for me, even more interesting and lucrative ones.
With the first heartbreak, it was exactly the same. I felt ugly, despised, and that no one else would love me. I already saw myself as the lonely woman locked at home, raising pets.
But none of that happened. And now, again alone, but with two beautiful children, I already feel that if someone else comes into my life, it will be to accompany me and not as the missing piece I always thought I needed. This opportunity, if it comes, will not be starting from scratch.
However, now in my forties, I had to emigrate, and even though I felt strengthened by so many changes, being out of my comfort zone made me feel as if everything had been erased. This new rebirth in foreign lands was a starting from scratch in many ways, from buying a plate and cutlery, to finding my way in the midst of a crowded street of people who knew where they were going, but I had no idea where I should be heading.
Nothing I had experienced had prepared me for this. And I started from scratch, with a heavy burden of fears, a family I could not disappoint, and a winter climate that posed silly obstacles, like not having blankets.
From those days, many memories are painful, like sleeping in the same clothes and placing the rest on top of us that were in the suitcases, trying to keep warm: eventually, fatigue was our ally to fall asleep.
Now, 6 years later, we continue on the steep path, but the summit is now clearly in sight. I am reaching where I need to be, with the experience gained and leaving the point five at the end. And why the 0.5, because in those decimal places lies all my baggage, which, even if it has served to boost my self-esteem, remains intact ready to come out when the right moment arrives.
Do we truly start from scratch then? Yes, but if we add those decimals, believe me, the perspective changes drastically.
