Portland Rose Festival Air Show - June 1988

1988 was the first year of the Portland Rose Festival Air Show. It has since had a name change to the Oregon International Air Show. It took place in Hillsboro OR just outside of Portland. I was lucky enough to be able to attend and take some pictures with my Canon AE-1 Program film camera. The following images are scans of the 35 year old prints I found while going through old family photos. I also used a little Adobe Lightroom to touch up some of the scans. Follow along and relive the memories with me!

Since the Rose Festival had always been about the US Navy ships that would come to port each year, the logical choice for the main attraction for the inaugural Rose Festival Air Show was the Blue Angels. They definitely put on quite a show.

As you can see it was a pretty gray day. While some of these shots seem to be little more than silhouettes...

There were a few that came out pretty well and with the help of Lightroom I think I got some pretty good shots.

Next was some head on action culminating in what looks like sure fiery death from the crowd angle. Not to worry though all was well. 😂

And hearty waves from the crowd for a job well done.

Of course there was more to see than just the Blue Angles. There were also plenty of WW2 warbirds along with some other more contemporary military aircraft. The following are a few of the aircraft I captured that day.

Always enjoyed airshows, thanks for sharing your flights, each country displays various crafts.

Went to a few as a kid. This one in 1988 is probably the last one for me. May have to look around for some. 😀

Last one for us was most probably around the same time when the boys were young, they had such fun sitting in the helicopter. Good old days when our airbase was operational and SADF functional.

These are all fantastic shots! It's even more impressive that it was film photography!

Thank you! I'm curious to see if I find the negatives as I continue to go through old pictures. They might be in better shape than the prints. 🙂

It has been an excellent walk, not only for evoking recent history, which is already beautiful, but also for the quality that your photographs convey. I don't need to be an expert to realize your beautiful talent and the passion you bring to each shot.

Thank you very much dear @oldmans for sharing this beautiful visual gift!

Receive a cordial and affectionate greeting!
