Last year, we were not able to have a reunion dinner due to the pandemic. I was then working in Sibu and was not able to go back to Kuching to celebrate Chinese New Year.
This year, it is a different story. The number of Covid cases has reduced and the situation is more or less under control. Therefore this year, my family was able to have a reunion dinner together with siblings and their families. The reunion dinner is a tradition that has been practiced by many Chinese families for decades.
It is the time of the year when the family is able to get together and catch up with each other while enjoying many Chinese New Year delicacies. Those who are working outstation or even overseas would make great efforts to go back to their hometown to celebrate this special occasion.
It is not surprising to find 3 or more generations gathering for this special function. During this time, I catch up with my nieces and nephews and find out what's happening in their lives.
We had so much good food. In the past, most if not all the food would be home-cooked. Nowadays, food bought from restaurants are also very common.
Roasted piglet.
Fried noodles.
Smoked ducked with vegetables.
Roasted lamb
Fried prawns
Steam fish
Duck with tumeric
And finally fried mix vegetables
As you can see from the photos, we had a feast. Although our parents are no longer with us, the Siaw family tries to maintain this family tradition. I look forward to the Chinese New Year Eve reunion dinner next year.
