Life sometimes gives hard choices

It's very difficult to decide...

There are times when Life gives us hard choices and we need to pick one of them. Dad was doing alright but from past few days his legs were getting swollen. Initially we were thinking, its because of he not doing any exercise and sitting for long hours, but then the question that came to mind is why now, why it did not happen earlier. So we decided to take him for a full check up, at the hospital where he had undergone the pacemaker surgery.

It was done in 2010, kudos to him, preserving all the records at one place, even though he does not remember anything now because of Dementia. It took me few hours to go through all of them, and find out the relevant ones. He was fitted with a pacemaker in 2010, and he wrote down the dates of admission, operation, discharge etc. And then he used to carry the pacemaker card with him, while traveling (as he should not undergo through the scanner in airport), but I could not find it. I asked him many times, but he firmly denied saying he does not know ( which is normal for him). Interestingly just before going to hospital, he somehow remembered and found that out. So that was a lovely long term memory spiking in at the last moment, which usually happens with such patients.

The batter life would easily span another 3-4 years, so that was some good news.

He is least concerned about anything, but then the doctor prescribed many tests, which was necessary to figure out the issue.

Not happy with just this glass of juice at lunch, but he coped with it after taking the second juice.

All his reports are normal, but the echo report is concerning, with severe MR and TR.

The doctor prescribed some medicines, saying its not concerning given his age, but I usually cross question about the implications and he said, the only way this can be fixed is through a open heart surgery, which is not recommended for his age. We can still speak to a cardio surgeon, if we want to, but we should go ahead with the medicines and do another echo after one month, and then consult.

Since I was not aware of these terminologies, I was not able to put up much in front of the doctor but after coming to home, when I searched and read through some articles, this sounds like a very concerning issue. I sent the reports to few of my friends who are doctors and they advised to consult other doctors, and cross check if the medicines given are going to help or not. We are preparing to see other doctors, but things are going to be tough for sure. Seeking divine help to guide us on the right path, do you think, it would be ideal to go ahead with an open heart surgery, if that's the only choice ?

He is ignorant of all these, and does not look like he needs an open heart surgery !! Praying God to help us go through the time......

Good thing the tests didn't catch any problems. As people get older, they get many diseases and are less likely to overcome them. So your father now has to follow the rules. Wishing everyone a healthy life

In fact, when people go to rest and stop all physical exercises in old age, various diseases start to take root in the body. But a little exercise can help keep us a little better. Anyway, I wish your father well.

I hope you will figure it out and find the best solution. By the appearance, your father looks very good and healthy for his age. Always useful to have some friends who are doctors, I´m sure this will help too.

Thank you for these inspiring words.

I know this is a difficult situation but do consult other doctors and see what they have to say..and need to have faith in almighty..things will be good. Take care

Thank you dear.

I pray for your father's good health.

Thank you so much.

Hello dear friend @sanjeevm good day
given the situation I think you should visit other professionals, the more opinions you have the better.
I hope it is not necessary to have surgery

Sometimes I have actually come to discover that life gives to us what we don't really want but we need to cope with it actually

With the favor of God, he will be a friend and if father does not need that open heart surgery, it sounds complicated if we add the age of his father, I imagine there will be other solutions to correct this instability a little in his body.

I definitely think you should get a second or even third opinion just to be sure. For the open heart surgery, there are also some tests to determine if the person is fit enough to undergo it. You can also consider the risk to reward ratio. What is the best case scenario after the surgery, and is it enough to risk it? I hope your father gets better soon.

Thank you.

I think the earlier we understand how the life works. Sometimes it gives us what we least expect

Hello, life makes us stronger by giving us such problems. I don't know, looking at your father it seems that he will become normal to a great extent in a few days. I think, he has worked hard in his life, has faced every problem. May God make him normal soon from this situation. And may he give you the strength to face this situation.

Thank you so much.

A second opinion is always a must. Hope Almighty gives a suitable solution for this issue

It would be wise to get a second opinion as open heart surgery obviously is risky for an elderly patient, but sometimes there is no other choice.
Wishing you all the wisdom to make the right decision, God will guide you through that.

Ya, took the second opinion yesterday, and open heart surgery is definitely a NO GO option.

Bhai apne kisi ko koi bimari aati hai na aur uske bad ma hospital ke chakkar achhe aadmi ko bhi pagal kar dete hai.. financial and time dono Pani ki tarah west hota hai.. get well soon didaji...

Praying God to help us go through the time.

I hope your prayer is answered sir.😊

Wao, this is serious. Going through heart surgery for his age is like a risk considering his health and body strength. I pray God intervene and strengthen him more.

Thank you.

You are welcome sir

I'm praying to God to see you through all this. As you've said, he doesn't seem like he needs an open heart surgery, but then we never know what's actually truly going on inside the body. Hopefully there are other options other than surgery

Hopefully there are other options other than surgery

Hopefully...

Any surgery has risks and should be avoided if possible. I would most definitely go and get some second opinions.
My mother had vascular dementia and it can be frustrating at times what they remember and what they don't.
Yes if you have friends who are doctors or specialising in heart matters then get their advice too.
I wish your Dad the best of health for many years to come and I know you make the right choices.

Thank you so much.

Surgery would be a last resort, spend time together. Sorry to hear your father is not well, wishing you and the family clarity with second opinions.

Yes, we will go through second and third or even more...surgery is definitely the last thing.

Quality of life always comes into play. Thoughts are with you and the family.

I am sorry to hear about the medical condition of your father. Illnesses are as much a trial for the caretakers as mich as they are for the ill.

Going for an open heart surgery in his age is dangerous. Hope there is another solution for his condition.

Hope there is another solution for his condition.

Hopefully, for at least another 3-4 years after which, his pacemaker will anyway need to change.

There are some tough and difficult decisions that are very hard to make in life but have faith that the surgery is going to be successful and your father will bounce back again.💪💪💪

How hard 💔 I imagine that at that age almost nothing matters, but it does matter to you 😔💔 now it matters to me too

Even with what your father is going through, he’s still looking healthy
Kudos for taking care of him
Good job

I know your dad will be fine and I’m sure that he’s a strong man because he looks quite healthy knowing fully well that he’s not really feeling good
Thumbs up to you

I am sure, there will be an alternative to surgery, but if necessary for the sake of his health, you must go for it, in the end, you want good for him, i wish you best of luck and wish him good health in the coming day.s

The truth is that it is a very complicated choice between operating or not on your father. I imagine that you should consult with the entire family and make what is the best decision for him.

do you think, it would be ideal to go ahead with an open heart surgery

No Sir. Age has its limitations. Although he looks healthy.

However, do consult other doctors, there could be other possible alternatives. I pray for his well-being and best health conditions. Old age has many limitations. You are a caring son. God bless you.

Thank you.

Oh gosh, open heart surgery would be a really, really, really difficult choice. My Nana had it at 80 and didn't wake up. I don't mean to scare you but if I'd look into other options first. It's so hard as our parents get old and sick. I hope your Dad is okay for a few more years yet.

Can I gently suggest you change the spelling/typo at the end of your blog? It's 'lose' not 'loose' - lots of English speakers make this mistake too. To 'lose' - lose the extra 'o'. Hope you don't mind me saying. xx

Hope you don't mind me saying

Never....We are also thinking not to go with open heart surgery, and just let him live as long as he can.

I think that's wise. Sometimes it's harder to do less, or feel like you aren't doing enough. But sometimes you are doing exactly what needs to be done, and that's okay.
