The traditions of education are no longer around. You send the children to school & they’re learning so many new things & new ways that if you yourself are not up to date, it’s almost impossible to help your children/grandchildren.
I feel as though those who make the decisions about curriculums have forgotten about the past & only look to the future. But are these new methods really working?
There needs to be more of a balance between the old & the new. We need to bring back religion. Religion can be taught without using just one aspect of God. There are basics & they need to be instilled in our children at school as well as at home. Children need to learn that there is a higher power no matter what religion they practice.
Our children may be taught basic math, but they are no longer taught about using that math with life skills. Children are using computers & other electronics to depend on things that are a necessity in life. They are lacking the necessary life skills to survive.
What good is 12x12 if you have to pull out a calculator to get the answer?
Some children don't even know their phone number in the case of an emergency. Instead of learning their phone number as a young child, they're introduced to the cell phone. I remember when I was young I knew my own phone number, plus my aunt, my mom's work number. my grandmother's number & this was just the important ones. I also knew several friends numbers.
It’s nice that computers are a part of education & yes, they do need to learn to use them earlier rather than later but what good is knowing how to use it if you have to turn to it every time you need some information you should already know.
What I see is that computers were a great idea for education when covid-19 happened, but it seems that the educators has taught the children to rely on them even when they should be able to figure things out without the computer.
What happens when our youth get in a situation where there are no computers?
I think that the computer should be used to assist the educators & the students, but it should not be the sole source of education. This is what I see happening to the education system in the United States.
When covid closed down the school system, the schools made a point of every child to receive a computer for being able to get their education at home. While this was great for the situation, it has now become the norm. Where I live and in many other states across the country, the schools supply a computer for every individual, the children no longer have textbooks to bring home & you don’t know or can even keep up with if you child has homework or is completing their homework as assigned.
They continue to expect the parent to help the child, but they have also separated the child from the parent simply by giving the child a computer & password that they can keep from the parent.
How is the parent to help the child if they don’t have access to what the child is doing? In some cases, the parents don’t even know how to use the computer. Computers should be used in school so that they can learn to use it properly, but that responsibility should not fall on the parent who knows very little about the computer. The parents shouldn’t be required to learn the computer just to help their children. There need to be rules & regulations concerning the use of computers in the school system.
Bottom line is that there needs to be a balance between the old methods and the new. This is the only way I see a student becoming a well-rounded person.
Thanks for listening to my opinions!
