Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share some pictures of these really cool looking, but aggressive, swans!
Swarmed by Swans
The little man and I were out on one of our recent fishing adventures and we went to a pond that we went to twice before but didn't really do a whole lot of things besides fish in one spot. We decided that we would go exploring a bit in different spots! This was a fun idea and although we didn't catch any fish when we did it, we certainly had a good time checking out the different areas of the pond.
The back area where we were was apparently the hang-out spot for a family of swans as well!
I'm a little torn about swans though. I don't remember if I heard it from someone or if someone told me but they are an invasive species and they don't have many natural predators that can keep their numbers in check. Because they are a pretty sizable bird and people don't eat them that I'm aware of, they tend to flourish and I think this causes a lot of issues with the local fauna that were here long before these birds were brought over. That is where my challenge is, they look nice but are they more damage than they are worth?! I will defer to the Avian experts here in the community to let me know if swans are a problem or not lol
The swans were certainly aggressive though! We went to this pond twice in the last few weeks, and the first time we were there, one of the swans kept chasing and trying to bite one of the Canadian geese that was roaming around the area. All we would hear is the goose squawking and the swan behind it flying and trying to extend it's neck so it can take a bite out of the goose. It was definitely an amusing scenario to witness but damn was the thing aggressive as hell!
I didn't think this aggression would pan out to being outside of the water but I was certainly wrong on that account! haha
I get the aggression, to an extent. We were there and the family wanted to come up on shore to let the little ones graze whatever was around. Because the mama was trying to protect her family, she kept hissing at us and moving closer trying to get us to back off. I wanted to swipe at it with my fishing pole to get it to go away but having a kid, I'm a little sentimental and understanding of the nature of just wanting to protect your young. We let the family into the area and moved away while they were doing their thing. Five minutes later they left and went swimming to somewhere else to eat some food so I'm glad that I just let them be and moved instead of engaging in a little brawl lol.
The little swan babies were cute though! All fluffy with their brown feathers that almost look more like fur. The noise they make too was nice, there was almost a chick sound to it in a way which also made me not want to be a big scary human to them lol. There's also a little bit of conflict with that one as well, we don't want them getting too comfortable with people and end up getting hurt or hurting someone that isn't as forgiving or familiar with how they are. If you run at them and scare them off, they might think twice before approaching a human again which is what we want with a lot of these animals. They are not domesticated and we should keep it that way with a lot of the species.
