Hummingbird chicks on our balcony [Eng-Sp]

Hello, Hivers! Happy New Year!

This is my first post of the year, so I’m taking this opportunity to wish you all a year filled with blessings for you and your loved ones.

Although I’m not a good photographer of birds, this year I start participating in this week's #SMaP Free Theme. The opportunity came to knock on my door unexpectedly, or rather, on my balcony, hehe.

You see, when I arrived in Bogota last month, my husband told me that a hummingbird had built a nest on the balcony of the apartment we are satying. That night, he showed me a photo of the nest where a couple of chicks could be seen already.

Since I arrived at night, I couldn’t see much. However, the next morning, when I looked out of the small window in my room that overlooks the balcony, I saw the hummingbird in the nest.

We made an effort not to disturb the balcony during the day so that the hummingbird could feed the chicks and so that the chicks would not be frightened.

But a few days later, I was able to capture these photos of one of the chicks through the glass of the small window in the room.

The hummingbird was feeding the chick, but I wasn’t quick enough to capture the moment.

Over the next few days, we kept an eye on the chicks from a distance.

Because one morning, when we tried to approach the balcony door, the hummingbird almost attacked us, hehe.

But on Christmas Eve morning, the Hummingbird was not around, and I was able to approach the balcony door and capture these images of one of the chicks that looked almost ready to leave the nest.

A few days later the nest was empty.

The last days a hummingbird has been hanging around the balcony again. I wonder if it is getting ready to nest. I hope so.

This is my entry in the Show Me A Photo Contest Round 199.

Hola Hivers!!!

It was a great luck indeed to be able to see them so close. I had had a few nests on my balcony in Caracas, but I had never been able to see the chicks so close.

Gracias a ti, querido amigo!

Wow, what an amazing experience to have right on your balcony! Hummingbirds are such fascinating creatures, and being able to watch their nesting process so closely must have felt like nature dropped a little gift at your doorstep.

I love how you respected their space and gave them the calm they needed to thrive. That shot you chose for the contest really captures a mix of vulnerability and determination in the chick—beautiful choice!

Also, fingers crossed for the hummingbird’s return. Imagine if your balcony becomes a regular nursery for these little wonders! Looking forward to updates if it does. Great entry for the #SMaP contest, and thanks for sharing this magical story!

I felt it like a beautiful Christmas gift from nature indeed.

We didn't want to disturb them, neither the chicks nor the mother and we were a little worried because there is a small construction site near where we are and sometimes there is a lot of noise especially in the middle of the morning, but fortunately the chicks thrived successfully.

Fingers crossed that more chicks will hatch on this balcony :)

Thank you very much for your comment!

I’m joining you in crossing my fingers!!! Unimaginable for me, I’ve never even seen a hummingbird!! 😉🙏
