The Killdeer is sometimes referred to as a handsome bird, likely due to its feather pattern and its striking red-rimmed eyes. I have only seen them near ponds, usually part of a larger natural area. Not quite a city bird, it has a wingspan of about 50 cm and can run or fly very swiftly. They are known to be very adept at distracting intruders from their nests and employ different tactics depending on the type of threat to their young.
