🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)

  • Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit
  • martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March

These large woodpeckers can be found all year round. Their loud, clear and memorable calls can be heard from afar and cannot be confused with anything else. They have a beautiful stylish look, the males have a long red cap on their head, and the females have a small one on the back of their head. They also have funny crazy eyes.

Despite the fact that they leave behind twisted, gutted trees without bark, they are extremely useful for trees and forests. Because they feed on harmful insects and their larvae, which damage the bark. And in the spring, after the snow melts, they really like to feast on ants that have just crawled out.

This is truly a stunning sight. The bird's vivid colors and large, expressive eyes are captivating. Nature's beauty never fails to impress. I hope to have the opportunity to observe this bird in person one day.
