🦉 Siberian chiffchaff (Phylloscopus (collybita) tristis)

  • Phylloscopus Greek: phyllon foliage, skopos seeker, observer
  • ollybita collybista (lat.), kollybistēs, kollybos (Greek) money changer, small coin (name - for a song similar to the sound of falling coins)
  • tristis sad, gloomy, mournful

This bird is not remarkable at all, it has a simple appearance without frills and bright plumage. However, it is interesting for its song. Or to be more precise, it is the Siberian subspecies that differs from the others in its voice. The European or Eastern European subspecies has a song consisting of short syllables, similar to drops falling into water. And the Siberian subspecies has a full-fledged song, which sounds beautiful and, in my opinion, perky, despite the Latin name.

The bird arrives in the midst of spring and even earlier, in my city approximately at the beginning of May or the end of April, depending on the weather. The bird flies away somewhere in the middle or end of September. The most interesting thing is that before flying off to warm countries, during this time in September it manages to participate in a mixed bird flock together with other birds that stay for the winter.
