🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)
- fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
- coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried
We call these birds something like "shiver". Its name comes from the common Slavic "zebati" - "to freeze", that is, feel cold.
And this is due to the fact that these are some of the first birds to return from wintering. They arrive early in the spring, when there is still a lot of snow in the forests and the weather is cool and unstable. They also fly back late, but unlike in the spring, this happens unnoticed, without any noise or voices in principle. I have met these birds at the end of October and even at the beginning of November.
By the way, I noticed that it is not so difficult to meet these birds in summer, despite the fact that at this time of year all birds behave secretively and are busy with their children. I met these birds in any forests, in mixed, light, and even dark coniferous ones.
