Good Morning to All My Hive Friends!
How are you all doing? I hope you're having a great day.
Anuradhapura, located in the heart of Sri Lanka, is a city that resonates with spirituality, culture, and history. My child had a great desire to visit and explore this remarkable place, so our family decided to take a trip together. We set out on a Monday morning and spent about five hours traveling to reach this iconic city. The journey began early in the day, and we took a hired bus with around 20 fellow travelers.
Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured historical cities and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its rich history and cultural significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the heritage of Sri Lanka. Stay tuned as I share more about our trip and the unforgettable experiences we had in this incredible city!
Its historical significance is truly remarkable. Founded in the 4th century BCE, Anuradhapura served as the capital of Sri Lanka for over 1,300 years. During this time, the ancient kings of Sri Lanka showcased their architectural and engineering brilliance by constructing magnificent stupas, monasteries, and reservoirs that still stand as awe-inspiring monuments today. Records suggest that Anuradhapura became deeply intertwined with Buddhism during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE. It was under his rule that Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka, shaping the city's spiritual and cultural identity for centuries to come.
This incredible blend of history, spirituality, and architectural wonder makes Anuradhapura a treasure trove of heritage and a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Sri Lanka’s past.
We arrived at the sacred city of Anuradhapura around 6 a.m., enjoying the journey on the bus. Our first stop was the Sri Maha Bodhi, one of the most revered sites in Sri Lanka. It is a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Even at that early hour, a large gathering of devotees had assembled. Offering flowers and conducting prayers were the main activities as worshippers sought blessings and spiritual peace.
The introduction of Buddhism to Anuradhapura brought significant transformation, leaving a profound impact on the city. Today, the ancient ruins in Anuradhapura stand as a testament to this remarkable heritage. The massive stone structures and intricate craftsmanship vividly reflect the skill and artistry of ancient Sri Lankan architects and sculptors.
This blend of spiritual devotion and architectural brilliance makes visiting the Sri Maha Bodhi a deeply moving experience, one that connects you to centuries of history and faith.
Thus, we completed our worship at the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, a deeply liberating and serene experience for the mind. It was even more meaningful as I sought blessings for the child I am carrying, adding a special sense of purpose to my visit.
After paying our respects, we departed from the site, leaving with a sense of fulfillment and peace. The other remarkable places we visited will be shared in detail on another day.
Thank you reading
Have A nice day.
Best Regards,
Samadi Madushanki .
