The Cons of Kids Being Social Media Influencers

in #hive-108278yesterday

All over the social media space, we come across different forms of content by different sets of people, both old and young. While being a social media influencer seems like a profitable profession, it comes with its downsides, such as cyberbullying, loss of privacy, identity issues, pressure, and many more, to name but a few. If my child were to say she wants to become an influencer, will I agree?, today I'll be talking about whether I'll agree with such a decision for my child at such minor age or not.

The internet through the years has shown that it's not a safe place, not even for an adult, not to mention a minor. Even adults who aren't influencers get backlash for how they look, what they do, and the likes just for showing it off on social media. Now imagine what those who are celebrities go through for airing almost all of their life activities online. Sometimes I visit some of their comment sections, and I'm like, Wow, is all this worth it?

I mean, the social media people have no filter with words and would ridicule anyone, raining abuses, trying to teach you how to love your life, school you ok things you did, and how they feel you could have done it better. Now, for an adult, this can be draining; for kids, it would be even worse, even though most times their parents tend to be the ones running most of the technical issues, but then we can't forget that it's creating pressure for the kids.

A celebrity lifestyle is one that comes with loads of demand and a hectic lifestyle that'll be too much for a young child, and it won't be ideal for such a young one to be keeping up with all that at such a young age. As a parent, I won't allow my child to engage in such at their young age; maybe when they're fully grown, then I can allow such, but then I don't understand what a minor would be influencing in the first place.

I can't watch or stand my child get cyberbullied; it'll be annoying, and even as an adult, when I go through such abuse, I'm pissed and sometimes end up being depressed. I don't want my child to walk through the same mental health path at their age, so when they're grown, then it'll be a different thing entirely, and even then I'll wholeheartedly support them in their profession as celebrities.

Being a celebrity at a young age can be dangerous because it affects and could lead to identity issues, because since they're known in the public space, it'll be hard to live their life peacefully with their own identity, because living as an influencer means you have to keep up with some lifestyle and identify. I want my child to enjoy their childhood as a child, not shouldering worries adults go through at their age.

So for me, I'll prefer that my child wait till she's old enough, and I'm certain I've trained her well enough to do things in a way that's morally upright and acceptable, so she won't go on to do things that not only embarrass themselves but also affect me and my family name as well.

You're very right about social media not even being safe for adults themselves. I recently watched people bully a certain popular Disney actor after she mistakenly got pregnant by some "useless" guy. All the ladies that use to be praising her became the critics. Sad thing is that people don't care about age when it comes to their interactions with celebreties. If their favorite child celebrity acted in a way they're not pleased with, they'll carry the matter like they're an adult, because like you said, you made it everyone's business the minute you post as a celebrity.
