Self-doubt, isn’t that the bane of our existence? I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever met who is so confident they have never experienced doubts. I’ve met a lot of people who carry a burden of self-doubt they are trying to peel off, layer by layer.
If you weren’t raised in a supportive and encouraging environment, it’s difficult to find even the smallest base to start building a sense of confidence. You may love something and be constantly second guessing your ability to so it ‘right’.
When you really examine the ‘right’, it’s not some actual rule or requirement but judging your own ability based on some standard set by someone else. Someone who appears to know what they are doing and is so much better. Most of the time, that’s not necessarily true the person is that much better, just has more faith in their own ability.
I know of a person, maybe more than one, in my circle of people who when I first met them would constantly dismiss their own writing ability. After a while, I met the dismissals with “bullshit” as the person had already heard the rest of the words behind the statement, more than once.
This person heard the same words from other people and eventually started embracing some of the words to build a base of faith on. Guess what, the person nows does some fantastic writing and stories. They are also learning new skills to compliment their storytelling skills.
Learning to trust in what we love to do isn’t always easy. Sometimes it can take a lifetime.
My friend, @epodcaster, loves to use the phrase, “Learn, share, grow”. Putting those words into action also helps us to learn we all have our uncertainties and doubt. Working together we can learn the tools we need to overcome and grow.
In doing so, we start to build a personal base of trust and confidence in our own abilities. As the base grows, we can pour more love into what we’re doing, making it an integrated part of who we are.
It took me many years to start actually doing what I loved. It was a fits and start path when I did start. What really matters is the path eventually led to some truly great people in my life who support and encourage what I do.
We support and encourage either other and what we love. We’re a community even thought not everyone in my life knows each other. It doesn’t matter, it matters we are present in each others lives. It matters the circle of the community is constantly growing as more are pulled in and embraced.
Allowing enough trust to do what I love, but not in isolation, has been like ripples on a pond.
Do you trust in what you are doing? Are you doing what you love?
