Back in the days of our forefathers in 16th, 17th centuries, there was a great warrior who was so powerful to the extent nobody can defeat him, he has a best friend of his who he so much trust and can do anything to favour him. It happens that other warriors like him have been trying to capture him with no avail , then they plan to destroy his power through his best friend who he so much trusted and they pay their middle friend to do that so that the two best friend can fight each other which he succeeded by lying to them about something that each of them did not say to each other. This makes both of them to be very upset and face each other in a battle but because both have powers the first one kill other friend and he himself turns to bush rat and enter the forest . the the middle friend who betray them, a big tree fell on him and died. This great warrior who turns to bush rat and enter bush to live the rest of his life is called ONIKOYI since then far back Yoruba's have been saying any member of Onikoyi should not eat a bush rat(okete) if they did they have eat their forefathers. But have seen many people who came from the same Onikoyi and they like bush rat , did you think this is real and if they do what will happens? Well nothing we happen because all that was just Yoruba believe ( superstitions). If you where to come out of this Onikoyi family would you as well make bush rat your forbidden meat? I believe God created all animals for our benefit and if am to ask , is there no bush rat before he turns to one? The answer is definitely NO, because bush rat are everywhere then and we eat them so if he turns to one then that makes them addition because am not sure that he will even spend more years in the forest because he's human in bush rat form. The story is a fare tail I don't believe that happens and even it does, am not following the saying that bush rat is there forefather if they eat it. We've heard a lot of things by Yoruba people saying if you do this, this will happen and they always have a frightening story to back it up. They give you poison and also provide antidote for it. Who says Yoruba's are not real , off course they are but there story is not genuine. All those story and effect of doing them have pass away. If you are from Onikoyi family now bro, sis, eat anything eatable because nothing happens even the Onikoyi family have been changing the family name to something nice.
Onikoyi is no more but its story remains and family are still living and eating bush rat as if it's there best meat ever because they choose not to believe in that story .
