As I gear up for the most wonderful time of the year, it’s also the season to give wallets a workout. The experience of indebtedness I had and the lesson I learned last year 2022 before entering this year 2023 is an unforgettable experience.
I don't want it again, therefore I have to “sleigh” my holiday budget with a merry list of “Spend Less on Christmas Shopping.”
From festive finds to wrapping up savings, I've got the scoop on how to spread holiday cheer without breaking the bank.
✓Setting a Budget
Before i start shopping, I establish a budget of one hundred thousand naira only (#100,000.00) for my Christmas holiday spending. I determine how much I can spend on gifts, decorations, and other expenses.
My budget is set up, I know who I'll be buying for, and what amount I am going to spend when it's time to shop. I will stick to the budgeted amount and I keep a list of what I’ve spent on the credit card so I don’t go over budget.
✓ Make a List
I have created a list of the people I need to buy gifts for, as well as any other holiday-related expenses. This will help me stay organized and avoid impulse purchases.
✓Price Comparison
Before making a purchase, compare
prices both online and in-store. I want to use price-comparison tools and apps to ensure that I'm getting the best deal.
✓Taking Advantage of Sales and Discounts
I will keep my eye out for sales, discounts, and promotional offers. Many retailers offer special deals during the Christmas holiday season, so I want to take advantage of these opportunities to save money.
✓Use Cashbacks and Rewards Programmes
I really want to consider using cards or apps that offer cashback or rewards for my Christmas purchases. Just be sure to pay off the balance to avoid interest charges.
✓Early bird Shopping
I have started my Christmas holiday shopping to avoid the last-minute rush. Early shoppers often have access to better deals, and it allows me to take advantage of sales throughout the season.
✓DIY Gifts
I consider making personalized gifts or DIY crafts. Handmade gifts are thoughtful and considered to cost less than store-bought items.
✓Limit Gift Exchanges
I have already decided on my gift limits and drawing names for gift exchanges within my family, staff and friends. This without doubt has helped reduce the number of gifts I need to buy on like last Christmas shopping without proper plans for.
✓Opt for Secret Santa
Instead of me buying individual gifts for everyone, I will organize a Secret gift exchange gathering on Sunday 25th December, 2023 at Deliverance Mission International Ministry. This way, each person only has to buy one gift for exchange.
It is in mind that the holiday season is about spending time with loved ones and expressing my appreciation, not necessarily about extravagant gifts. Finding meaningful and thoughtful presents within my budget will make the holiday season enjoyable without putting a strain on my pocket.
