I don't know if I am the only one that always get scared whenever a doctor calls out names of certain sicknesses and diseases.
I have finally come to understand that what you don't know can become a great obstacle in life. This is what I have come to understand while I worked as an optometrist.
Working in an optometric hospital has made me to love and respect the medical profession more.
I now know so many things that I didn't know before. For instance, I now know the reason why many people get blind, which is due to the ignorance on certain eye problems they are faced with. Some eye illnesses include glaucoma, cataracts, retinopathy, astigmatism , colour-blindness and even diabetes has been discovered to cause eye blindness.
So I'm going to be throwing more light on glaucoma, which is one of the most common eye conditions amongst all.
Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive eye disease caused by damage to the optic nerve , which leads to visual field loss.
Glaucoma is generally associated with raised intra- ocular pressure, in some cases it occurs even when the intra- ocular pressure is within normal range.
Types of glaucoma::
Some common types of glaucoma are;
*Primary open angle
*Angle closure
*Normal tension
*Secondary.
Symptoms of glaucoma::
*Patchy blind spots in your peripheral or contral vision, frequently experienced in both eyes.
*Severe headache and Eye pain.
*Halos around lights , Eye redness etc.
The first time that I heard that name, it brought about a slight fear in my heart because the Echo of the name GLAUCOMA sounds to me as if all hope is lost.
There are lots of gadgets used in testing the eyes.
Am here to encourage everyone to always go for regular check up for their eyes to avoid serious problems in the future. Eye sicknesses should not be left untreated because it can lead to permanent blindness. Also remember that the eyes is the beauty of all human beings.
