Just thinking out loud, is there any typical Nigerian who doesn't know one or two home remedies for one sickness or the other or maybe even more? Well, maybe there is but the truth is, you can not be a Nigerian, and not know any home remedies because many of us survive with that. It does not mean we are neglecting the role of the drugs but as a Nigerian, we know how it is over here, so I'm not sure there is any Nigerian without the knowledge of home remedies. Lol
For someone who hates drugs, I think it is safe to say that although most of the home remedies for some sickness are funny, she would prefer to make use of them rather than go for proper medication.
A few weeks ago, I felt sick, really sick although I knew that I needed to take a chill pill, rest, go for a test and of course take some medication especially since I knew that we would be starting our examination soon, which we already did but I didn't want to buy to the idea of doing the medication partly because the thought of how I was going to start taking drugs daily for consecutive five days or weeks was beginning to give me chills down my spine and frightening.
I remember back then when my dad was alive, whenever he heard that I was ill, he just did not bother himself because he knew that I wouldn't for one take any medication, and also even if he forced me to take any medication, he knew it was going to be a waste of his money, it either he finds it lying at every hidden corner around the house or I will never take it.
So, the old man took a chill pill and allowed me to do my thing whenever I was sick, and that is how I got to know a few home remedies for fever or any sickness, especially for those who are like me but it is still not an assurance that those work especially if it is critical or becomes critical, it is advisable to visit the hospital.
For someone who knows her body and knows when I am close to falling ill to the extent of getting bedridden, it is easier, to work around those things and not have to worry much about anything. So, I know the signs when my body is entering a reservoir state and needs external support from me to keep it going.
For home remedies for malaria/typhoid, I usually buy a bag of Lipton tea' and a bottle of 'Teem Soda drink' mix them, and leave them overnight. Immediately I am up the next day, I drink all of it. It helps you urinate a lot and relief the body.
Or I go out in the early hours of the morning, buy or pluck 'Moringa leaves' I make sure to get a lot of it, come back home, rinse them out with water, get my pot, add a few cups of water, pluck and put in my clean moringa leaves into and allow to boil
For cold or having a running nose, I use hot balm lying around the house and also boil water pour it into a bowl, and bury my face into it. I have also heard people use shea butter when they have a boil on their body, although don't know how true that is but I have also heard that it works.
