You know when love hits you and all of a sudden your brain just stops working and all you can think of is how crazy you are about this person, your world revolves around this person and you forget the most important things only to realize your mistake when it’s too late.
People talk about a lot of things during the talking stage of their relationship but surprisingly a lot don’t talk about medical compatibility regardless of medical compatibility awareness.
It’s one thing to break up because your partner cheated or did something unforgivable but it’s another thing to walk away from a relationship without any other reason, but because of the medical incompatibility of you and your partner. It hurts so bad that a lot of people are unable to get over the pain of walking away from a relationship because of their medical incompatibility.
Medical compatibility cuts across genotype, blood group, fertility, STD, and many more but I’ll be emphasizing more on GENEOTYPE.
A week ago I watched a video of a girl whose brother died of sickle cell, going through the comment section my heart was shattered. I have never seen so many sickle cell patients in one space as I saw in the comment section of that video.
These people talked about how scared they were of dying without fulfilling their dreams, some talked about their crises and some who had two siblings who were going through this pain expressed their pain.
I knew we had quite a number of people living with sickle cell but the number of people I saw in the comment section of that video was heartbreaking.
I have never felt so close to a sickle cell patient like I did that day and honestly it’s too much of a risk to subject your child or children to. A lifetime of pain and suffering? Nah, ain’t worth it.
For me whenever I get into any relationship I always look at the long term, I always envisage my life with my partner not just in the present but in the future as well meaning in terms of marriage. “Can I tolerate this from this person in four to five years' time without getting tired?” “Would I be subjected to this kind of life till whenever?” Whenever I think about all these I am forced to make certain decisions not just for the now but for myself and my unborn babies.
Before sticking to your partner regardless of your medical incompatibility think about your children, your mental health, and everything in between, is it what risking for love? Whatever answer you get I would advise you to act accordingly.
Before you start getting butterflies in your stomach and imagining crazy scenes in your head about the person you intend to be in a relationship with please you both should check if you both are medically compatible or not. I know the overpouring emotions that come with meeting a new person but before you both unlock the different levels of your talking stage I advise you to please do the needful to avoid future heartbreaks and jeopardizing an innocent child’s life.
One funny thing about checking one’s genotype is that sometimes different hospitals or labs can give different results. I have seen cases where a person goes for his or her genotype test and it's AA, the person goes to another hospital and it can be AS, as crazy as it sounds it happens.
Before you declare that you are AA or AS make sure you have checked multiple times to be sure.
Love is a beautiful thing but when but when it endangers one's life then it becomes a problem
