I had a series of confusing thoughts on which artist, music and emotion I should go for in writing this post. It's never easy for me when it comes to writing about my favourite song so I always go with my most recent favourite (one I find myself listening to more often) and the list got simple.
My simple list has three songs I wish I could share on all but I'm choosing one, maybe it's my favourite. The very recent "APT" by RosΓ© and Bruno Mars had me all excited but the songs "To Die For" and "For The Lover That I Lost" by Sam Smith had me on a roller coaster of emotions.
Aside the weird reasons, for the melody, harmony and message, I'm choosing "For The Lover That I Lost" by Sam Smith, a recent favourite of mine and my most played song in the last week.
One of the weird reasons is the artist, I'm totally against same sex intimate relationship and this artist is for it. But I'm not using that to rule out all his good songs as he has a great voice, or would you? So I still love the song regardless of this reason.
Another weird reason is the song, about losing life of a loved one and I'm relating it to losing contact with a loved one because I've never lost a loved one's life. It's always sad that you'd never see someone you once loved or spend so much time with.
The very first time I listened to the song, I was like "This is beautiful!" neglecting what the lyrics was actually saying as I was yet to check it's lyrics but just getting lost in the melody and harmony of the song. It's why we never judge a song by the first listen.
"For The Lover That I Lost" is a song written for a lover that has gone (dead) and recounting memories of when they were alive. A part of the lyrics that got me emotional and curious about the whole song lyrics was the part sang "I stand by all my choices, even though I paid the cost" πΆ
That part of the song made me realize that there are indeed some choices we made in the past that even though we regret them, we would still make those same choices if given the chance because it could have been better than not making a choice.
The feelings the song invokes in me.
I had to play the song as I write this part and I'm not surprised, I still feel the same feelings I had from all the times I've been listening to it. From a sad to happy feeling, from feeling hopeless to feeling hopeful.
The instrumental at the intro had me thinking into deep thoughts as it brings about a calm feeling and being less aware of what is going on around me. And then, his voice came in with the first line of the lyrics connecting me to his song more.
The chorus doesn't have just a beautiful message but it's melody had me feeling sad and happy at the same time. It takes a lot for a song to act in both ways, this song pass that point especially with the duet cover, one with Celine Dion & Sam Smith.
Do listen to the song on the video I shared above and let me know what you think about listening it for the first time. "This is my entry to the Hivenaijaweekly prompt and you're invited to participate too"
