Once I was offered admission into a Faculty in the university, under our change-of-course scheme, only I was required to pay for it. Actually that's a bribe because it is free once you meet the requirements. I met the requirements. My parents were far away in Delta State, the university was in Lagos and I had a handsome enough pocket money to do the transaction, but I toned down my voice and whispered to the secretary of the Faculty who made the offer that, it is against my faith to do bribes, that the worst that can happen to me is to journey back to Warri as a drop-out and face the anger of my parents. I ended by saying I was ready to make this journey, than to give him a bribe. He was shocked at what a boy was telling him and I walked away.

Somehow, maybe he was touched, my name was forwarded to the Head of Dept from same secretary's office and to God be the glory, I got that admission without giving a dime of bribe to anyone.

The above is the extent to which I value a good name or reputation. It has to do with living a life of integrity and the description of myself once you click on my Hive username says so. So ofcourse, like the example above this isn't an eye-service kind of thing, it is an overwhelming passion for right conduct in all things; the root and fuel for this being the fear of God domiciled in my heart.

My mantra is, "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, to be respected is better than silver and gold.". In other words nothing is too much to loose, so long as it gives ventilation to moral rectitude.

The truth is that people are always watching and these sacrifices one makes for a good name or reputation becomes what you are known for and over time I have seen that for me, it paves the way, it gets rewarded. It is beautiful perhaps beyond description that I can move around boldly, pick any call that comes into my phone freely because I have nothing to hide, in public it indeed brings honour my way.

Cheers

Wow I’m touched by this story and then by the bravery you showed and what you were ready to put as stake if things went wrong.

Greetings, I'm happy it made such an impression on you.

With parents, one a teacher and the other(my Dad) who schooled in England, who were so given to our education, it was scary to face them with any bad news.
I thank God for the bravery, I call faith.
It takes conviction to take risks.

Thanks for your nice comment.

Yes!!!
That's the simple Truth.
People are always watching us
If you do bad or good in the life, you'd always meet it in front. Just like the law of karma states. You'd be shocked at the rate which people watch you. Thank you for sharing out this points of yours

Exactly sir, people see a lot more than we think and being a good example to people is worthy living.
The very ancient law of sowing and reaping should teach folks wisdom as per results of actions.

More importantly is a God that watches. His wisdom teaches that a good reputation should never be exchanged for selfish gains.

My appreciation my coming over.
Regards

It really is worth living.
Talking from experience.
You're welcome boss
It was a good read for me

You're welcome

This resonates well with what I told a friend today. He did something quite strange and I had to tell him people are watching even if they don't mention it. He to argue but I made my stand. I'm glad he corrected himself later.

He I think I'll show him this blog.

I'm tempted to think that the secretary had to do the needful because he thought you can deal with him hence the bravery.

Hehe, nice your friend saw reasons to reconsider his stand. Real life is living selflessly and enshrined in this, is a responsibility to others.

A pleasure if you show him this blog.

On the secretary, it could also be a conscience thing too. You see, taking the "risk" to do what is right has a tendency of encourage others to do same, as well as pricking the conscience of some on the wrong path, to retrace their steps.

Thanks for visiting sis.

Happy Sunday

Happy Sunday to you too
