It's interesting what power can do to people, especially with their memory. Last I checked, no one is really "self-made," as many try to claim. You don't just make it to the top on your own. Somehow, in someways, you had people around you contribute to your success. I guess the altitude up there is really something to cause people to change. But is that really the case?
Someone I used to think of as a friendly, funny person—the kind of guy that's just himself and people just love him—attained some level of power and no one could recognise him again. He became something entirely different, and everyone's not only surprised but generally displeased with him. And it got me wondering, because I thought we're all not kids anymore.
It turns out, and as we generally all know, people don't exactly change when they gain power, money, or fame. It appears that these resources rather amplify who they really are.
If you're likely to find a way to be kind and generous regardless of how much you really have, the more likely you are to even do more when there's an abundance of resources. The same is true for the other end of the rope. Those that have some shady sides to their personality could have some negative energy amplified if they allow it.
Power hungry. I think that's what it's called. It turned out that this fellow has allowed power to consume him. Forgetting how the very same people that were his friends had always been good and loyal to him, he's allowed power to turn him into a monster before them. It never lasts long, however, and it's only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down unless it straightens up.
I once abused power when I was much younger. I wasn't malicious or anything, but I basically mismanaged dealing with people. My emotions sometimes directed how I felt and the actions I took. I ended up making a whole of enemies. But then, I was only eight or nine years old. I was captain of my class, but people were always looking to beat me up after school hours. How I always escaped, I don't even remember.
With great power comes great responsibility. And what makes a good leader is being humble, empathetic, and wise in making decisions. After all, leadership is about service, and people will react according to the kind of service you give them.
