Hi everyone, and welcome to my blog. On this topic, I will be writing about myths I believed as a child.
Growing up as children, we were told lots of superstitions that sometimes even created fear in us. We tend to believe them because we are very young and harmless, so adults feel they can tame us down with them. I will be sharing some of the one's I've heard here and how I felt when I realized they were just myths. Some are actually very funny, though.
As children, we were made to believe that when our teeth fell off, if they were down, we were to bury them and surround them with stones according to our age. But if it was the upper teeth that fell off, we were to throw them at the top roof of our house so that the angels could take them and give us fresh and finer teeth. Sometimes we were told that we should put our teeth under our pillow so fairies would come and take them away. That is actually not funny because most of my friends tried it out, but nothing happened. and we were also told that if a lizard ate our broken tooth, we would never grow teeth in that place again.
Another myth I was told is that if I sit on my slippers, someone will lie against me, so ever since then, I have never sat on my slippers again because I don't want anyone to lie against me. When I got to discover that there is no such thing, it was when I went to my friend's place and we were outside the house, so my friend removed her slippers and sat on them. Then I screamed at her that she should stand up and not sit on her slippers, or else someone would lie against her. Everybody there burst out laughing, asking me where I got that kind of information from and her mom told me that there's no such thing Well, I don't know how true or fake that is, though.
I was also made to believe that if we see white birds flying up high and we flap our fingers, we are singing the song that follows it, which is:
"Leke leke give me white fingers
Leke leke give me white fingers
Leke leke give me white fingers"
Any time the birds pass and we sing this song as many times as we can till the birds are no longer in sight, we will have white fingers. Doing that with a child was very funny because at that point all the children in the compound would come out asking Leke Leke to give them a white finger, which never happened, but whenever we see a white touch on our fingers, we assume that Leke Leke has given us white fingers.
Growing up to puberty as girls, we were told that if a boy just touched us, we would get pregnant and that we should never allow a boy to touch us.
When I realized that all of this was not true, I just laughed it out, especially the one about sitting on your slippers.
There are so many myths we were told that I can't even remember most of them, but now that I'm all grown up, I can't believe such a thing anymore.
