Dangote has carved himself a name as the business mogul in Africa and I respect his business acumen. If I am given the opportunity to choose between a million naira and a day with Dangote, I would first analyze the options and the opportunity each presents.
To start with, a million naira is not much money, but enough to start a business, after all he started his business journey with a loan from family. He also started small so even though one million is small, it is enough to get someone started on his/her journey to wealth. I can start a business with that amount and build myself up by applying basic business principles.
On the other hand, the wealth of experience from Dangote is something one can glean from. If he would be open to sharing business tips, experience and secrets with me, I’ll jump on this immediately. I am leaning more towards spending a day with him because first off, I would like to pitch my business to him, get him to invest possibly. Remember that a whole day is a lot of hours.
Imagine having him invest in my snacks business. It would be incredible. But then, what if he doesn’t have interest in my proposal and only listens to me the whole day and gives me some advise. That one million naira would have been worth it. But nevertheless, at least I was able to shoot my shot. One million naira is not a lot of money to be honest. An opportunity to pitch directly to Dangote is worth billions and I’ll grab it in an instant.
Another reason why I prefer a day with him to having a million naira is that even if I do not get to learn anything from him, I am sure to get referrals to other investors or proper channels to go about my business. So let’s picture the worst case scenario that he doesn’t invest, and only listens to my pitch and all, no job, no connection nothing to show for a whole day with the richest man in Africa. One thing I will use to my advantage is social media. Ahh don’t underestimate me. I will take enough pictures, and use that to publicize my brand. I would sell like wildfire. One way or the other, things will work. An ebook titled “15 business secrets Dangote taught me” will sell rapidly and I will earn millions of naira.
I would always tell people that coming into instant wealth doesn’t make you rich. That’s why lottery winners and many grant winners become broke after a few years. Having the ability to sustain that wealth is what makes you rich. I would rather learn how to grow rich and sustain that status. Remember that time they say, is money, if Dangote is willing to give me so much time, the. Definitely there’s got to be value to that time.
