Scientists traced popcorn's origins back to around 4,700 BC with Peruvians enjoying those first pops. In the 19th century, it even became a breakfast cereal with milk and sweeteners. Source
Movie theaters, famous for popcorn, famously mark up concessions insanely (sometimes over 12,000% above production costs!) – that's how they afford luxuries for us - Source. Popcorn also served as an affordable meal in the Great Depression. Plus, unpopped kernels store nearly indefinitely, waiting for their fluffy destiny!
