Hello everyone,
Today happens to be a busy day for my at my farm. If dry season over here and about time for harvesting most of my tubers plants. So today was just a day to harvest some coco yam, one of the foods we have here in my country and we do enjoy eating it either as swallow or with sauce.
Harvesting my own coco yam has really been such a wonderful experience and there were so many great lessons learnt in the course of the process. I began by looking for an indication that it was ripe. this I did when the leaves were blurry yellow and the stems appeared somewhat limp. That a common indication that it up for harvest So once I saw those cues I was aware that it was opportune to go deep

When I started the harvest, I began by surrounding each plant with a small hole, and using my hands and a small stick I lifted the tubers gently. I enjoyed the experience of cleaning and washing each tuber knowing these where fresh and full of flavor. And after harvest, I placed them in a cool dry place to avoid rotting until when I wanted to transplant them.

As for transplanting, I chose a place in my garden which was away from the shadow with good drainage. I went ahead and make two small holes for each of the tuber and placed them gently in the holes and then covered them with much to help them grow. Then, I continued watering them just as a confirmation they had everything they require from water to form roots for growth and development.

To actually see my coco yam from the time it was harvested and up to when it was time to plant it back has been a rich experience. Not only did I get my homegrown food, but I also became not just a consumer of the local product but also an owner of the new kind of self. If you have never done it, I encourage you to do it. it is one of the rewarding experiences I have ever enjoyed.
