Hello everyone, trust y'all had a great day. As part of our internship, we were required to take a break and venture outside to practice some of the things that we have been learning in the course of our internship. That is why we were all picked then transported to a large farm outside the town but within the state.
This farm has different sections both the crops, animals as well as livestocks. That was why today we were taken to the pig farm and let me tell you it was my worst nightmare, because I don’t like pigs and I will not go even near them But I had no choice because it was compulsory for all of us to go inside the pig farm. When I got there I felt cold and scared as well.
When I entered the pen and saw giant pigs I was in tears, I could not believe that we were to go into their pen, clean it, and bath them. I was afraid and told the coordinator I will not, but he reassured me and said that I should not be afraid and that the pigs are friendly and will not hurt me either.
Before we got into the pen they instructed us to wash our leg at the dip point, where water was mixed with some sort of disinfectant to ensure we didn’t introduce germs from the outside world into the pen.
The manager showed me the tools that I was to use in cleaning the pen.
We all began the cleaning process and each person was handed to clean, bath and even feed a pig.
I had to be carried into my pen by a friend who had no fear of the pigs like I used to have.
The pens contained mud and waste, which meant that such materials had to be properly cleared and dumped. Before I could sort it out, the waste was smelling and stinky so I had to protect myself by using a nose mask and then started cleaning the place.
First of all I made use of a broom with parker to sweep the waste and mud from the floor.
Subsequently, I emptied the previous drinking water from the drinker and refilled it with a new one.
Then I fixed my hose , brought the hose inside then bath the pig. At first, the pig was trying to escape the water but at some point the pig was even having fun in it.
Later on I had to go and mix the food which was to be given to them after the bath. It was formulated feed but it has to be mixed thoroughly with water so that the food could be easy to digest.
While I was mixing the feed for the pigs, I saw that the pigs were moving a lot and were noisy. The Manager of the pigs farm to which I posed my query explained that this was so since the pigs were hungry and sensed the smell of the feed.
Later on, I prepared the feed and ensured the pig was fed from the pen, this time I was not scared anymore as I was slowly gaining acquaintance with them and they proved friendly.
They were also given supplement feed which was dried corn.
Funny enough, the pigs began to nod off after eating, so I left to clean my tools which I used.
It was a fun experience and would wish to go there again to bath them.
