Hello, everyone. I welcome you all once again to my blog, and I am very excited to write and share my blog here in this community. It is a pleasure sharing with you all this post and I hope we will sustain this project with the support of the community members and the Hive ecosystem at large. The future of the community is bright and for us to reap the benefits of it, we need to collaborate and work together as a community.
As the weather conditions in our country have changed to the Harmattan season where every place is so dusty and polluted, I would like to share some tips for one of the most chronic respiratory diseases (Asthma).
What is Asthma?
Asthma as indicated above, is a chronic respiratory disease that millions of people are being affected by globally. Asthma is characterized by spasms of the bronchial tubes, inflammation, and airway obstruction. It can cause chest tightness, reduced physical activity, wheezing, and coughing. Asthma is manageable and can be controlled when care and attention are given to it.
Asthma condition is complex and it involves environmental factors as well as the immune system. Asthmatic patients when they come into contact with an asthma trigger, trigger their immune system to overreact and cause airway constriction and inflammation in the body. These asthma triggers include pet dander, pollen, dust mites, etc. When these triggers get into their system, excessive mucus is produced in their respiratory system due to the swollen airways, leading to a narrow path for air to pass through.
Management of Asthmatic Symptoms
As it stands now, there is no effective cure for asthma and as such we can only try to manage the symptoms that it causes by following the right and correct treatment as prescribed. First of all, as an asthmatic patient, you need to draw up a schedule with your Doctor concerning your medications, emergency procedures, and treatment goals.
In addition, as an asthmatic patient, you need to make sure you stay away from asthma triggers such as respiratory infections like flu, allergens like dust mites, and irritants like strong chemicals and smoke. It is advised for an asthmatic patient to monitor their symptoms regularly. They should keep track record of their asthma symptoms including what triggers it, how they occur, and when or where they trigger.
Moreover, an asthmatic patient is advised to stay healthy. He should be involved in regular or daily exercise, have a balanced diet, and get enough sleep. Asthmatic patients should have a peak flow meter to measure their lung performance regularly and ensure they get vaccinated for pneumococcal and flu to prevent respiratory infections as little as possible.
We should understand that asthma is just a respiratory disease and can be controlled if we effectively follow the prescribed procedures and medications by the Doctor. Let's all try to avoid anything that can lead us to this disease, especially in this weather.
Thank you all for your time and attention in reading my post. I am looking forward to seeing you all in my subsequent posts.
