One may be perplexed about what at all is mindful walking in the first place. In this modern world, we find the act of having a peaceful and tranquil feeling impossible when we can easily find that under our feet. It sounds weird, right? I know, let’s dive more into that topic (mindful walking). It is a simple practice and after steadily reading this post I believe that you will understand what I meant here.
Mindful Walking
It is the act of having a focused and attentive walking where you pay much attention to every step of your walking. This kind of looks difficult for beginners but then with practice, you will easily overcome any difficulties it has. You need to understand that Mindful walking is different from the just causal walk you used to have daily. It involves staying away from any background noise or distractions and only focusing on your walking. It has been proven by scientific research that, mindful walking can trigger some significant changes in both our minds and bodies. This is due to the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system when one is undergoing mindful walking.
This leads to the reduction of stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine, and dopamine. In addition, mindful walking is proven to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, and promote healing. Let’s now look at some of the physical benefits and that of mental and emotional benefits.
Physical Benefits
Some of the physical benefits of mindful walking include; enhancement of digestion, strengthening immune system, improving cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and also provides better balancing and coordination.
Mental and emotional benefits
Aside from all the physical benefits that mindful waking provides, it also provides some additional mental benefits including; improved sleep quality, reduced depression and anxiety symptoms, enhancement of concentration and focus, and improved emotional regulation.
How to Get Started Mindful Walking
Let’s briefly look at some steps one can follow to be in that state of Mindful Walking.
- First of all, choose a quiet environment or routine so you can make yourself comfortable.
- As a beginner, you can start with just 10 minutes of walking.
While walking, focus on the breathing and sensation of the feet as it touches the ground. - Put attention to the movement of your body
- Lastly, when the mind is moving out of focus, just gently bring back your focus to your footsteps and you will be fine.
Note that as you keep on walking in that serene environment, you will be hearing the sounds of your footsteps and pay not any attention to them, rather focus on your steps. In conclusion, to reap the full benefits of this act, you must make it your habit, and trust me, you will indeed love it.
Thank you all for your time and attention in reading my post. I am looking forward to seeing you all in my subsequent posts.
